1956 CADILLAC Power Antenna Mast Replacement

Was du brauchst

  1. 1956 CADILLAC Power Antenna Mast Replacement, Remove the antenna wire: Schritt 1, Bild 1 von 1
    • Carefully remove the antenna wire by loosening the two bolts that attach it to the mast housing and gently remove it from the housing.

  2. 1956 CADILLAC Power Antenna Mast Replacement, Remove the Antenna Motor: Schritt 2, Bild 1 von 1
    • Remove the antenna motor by removing the two bolts attaching it to the gear housing and pull the motor of of the housing. Do not attempt to power up the motor if the antenna hasn't been run for a long time.

  3. 1956 CADILLAC Power Antenna Mast Replacement, Test the Antenna Motor: Schritt 3, Bild 1 von 1
    • The antenna motor has to wires. The green and blue wire are to run the motor in either direction to feed in or feed out the antenna mast. To run the motor connect either wire to 12 Volt positive and connect the housing of the motor to ground. If the motor is not working you can find a repair guide here.

    • In the next step we have to fully extend the antenna mast. This can either be done by hand by turning the flexible drive gear connector coupling or by using the motor. To use the motor mount it back onto the housing , ground the antenna housing to an 12 volt power supply and connect the green wire to the positive lead.

  4. 1956 CADILLAC Power Antenna Mast Replacement, Remove Antenna Mast with Housing: Schritt 5, Bild 1 von 1
    • After the antenna mast has been fully extended remove the two bolts that attach the antenna mast housing to the drive gear housing. Loosen the antenna mast housing and reconnect the motor to the green lead. Run the motor until the nylon of the mast has been transported out of the drive gear housing and remove the antenna mast housing with mast.

  5. 1956 CADILLAC Power Antenna Mast Replacement, Remove the old Mast and Top Bushing: Schritt 6, Bild 1 von 1
    • Manually retract the old mast by hand. Once the old mast is fully retracted push the old mast downward and out through the top nylon bushing and fully remove the mast. Remove the top bushing from the mast housing. REMEMBER how far the mast sits above the top bushing as you can set the hight during reassembly.

  6. 1956 CADILLAC Power Antenna Mast Replacement, Dissassemble Drive Gear and Clean: Schritt 7, Bild 1 von 1
    • Completely disassemble the drive gear housing and clean all parts from old hardened grease. Be careful when removing the spring loaded pressure liner to not loose the small springs within the pressure liner.

  7. 1956 CADILLAC Power Antenna Mast Replacement, Reassemble Drive Gear and Lube: Schritt 8, Bild 1 von 1
    • Reassemble drive gear in reverse order and make sure to lube all the moving parts accordingly and sufficient. Mount the motor and run drive gear to make sure drive gear is running smooth in both directions.

Abschluss

To reassemble the antenna follow these instructions in reverse order. When installing the mast from the bottom into the mast housing make sure not to damage the antenna pick-up inside the mast housing. Use the blue wire of the motor to feed in the nylon of the mast

Extremely caring for doing this, we all struggle with these power antennas eventually. I had to go generic as rebuilds are a fortune ( 66 ) and the nylon gears can still break anytime, I hear?

The are more nylon and plastic parts in these old power antennas than just the nylon cord that moves the mast. It is also the pressure liner, the top and lower bushings and in the case of the 1956, 1957 and 1958 CADILLAC power antenna also the flexible drive gear coupling. Over the decades the materials simply have become brittle and break.
