Einleitung

Users will gain knowledge in wiring environmental sensor nodes. This includes stripping, splicing, and crimping wires to ensure connections stay in place to withstand time and the elements.

First disconnect the plug to the solar panel
  • First disconnect the plug to the solar panel

  • Grabbing the white connector, pull the battery connector from the solar charge controller

  • Disconnect the plugs for the autosampler battery

    • Be sure to also disconnect the connector that plugs into the battery port of the sampler

  • Unscrew conduit and release to open up more space to work with

  • Unscrew existing wires using 260 / 1.5 x 40 flathead screwdriver

  • Cut and strip each wire

  • Do not strip the green wire

  • Use a wire cutter to trim existing wire and remove old copper strands

  • Strip the 18-gage wire about 1/4"

  • Cut 20-gage wire approximately 6 inches. Repeat until you have five new wires.

  • Strip each wire approximately 1/4". Do this on both ends of each wire

  • On only one side of each wire, crimp on a wire ferrule

  • Be sure the ferrule is for wire sizes ranging from 24-20 gage

  • Crimp a splice connector to the other end of the wire

    • Be sure the color of the connector is lined up the the same color dot on the crimping tool

  • Place the other end of the splice connector over 18-gage wire. Then crimp to secure the connection

    • Here, we connect 18-gage brown to 20-gage green; and the rest to matching colors

  • Although these wires are in pairs, strip each wire individually, approximately 1/4"

  • Before inserting two wires into a given ferrule, it may help to twist the wires together

  • Pull the wires through

  • Reattach the conduit to provide strain relief and prevent wires from being dragged down

  • Insert the wires and screw down using 260 / 1.5 x 40 flathead screwdriver until tight

    • Hand tight is just right. Be careful not to over-tighten and crush the wire ferrules

  • The battery connectors go in the fifth and sixth positions from the left

  • This is done while the wires are in the enclosure, but pictures have been taken outside to make it easier to see

  • Using velcro, re-secure the relay board to the side of the enclosure

  • Using velcro, attach the battery to the inside of the enclosure door

    • Be sure to clean the surfaces beforehand.

    • Be sure the soft side is attached to the enclosure.

  • In case the wiring of an ultrasonic sensor comes loose, here is the wiring.

  • First reconnect the batteries.

    • Remember to plug in the other connector into the autosampler

  • Secure solar charge controller to the side of the enclosure using velcro

  • Plug in the solar panel last

Abschluss

Now we can close and lock up the enclosure. The node is ready to test and confirm everything is working,
