Dell Latitude D820 Memory Chip (RAM) Replacement

    • Shut down your computer. Disconnect all power sources before opening the computer cover or panels.

    • Remove the battery, hinge cover, and keyboard from the computer.

    • Ground yourself by touching one of the metal connectors on the back of the computer.

    • If you leave the area, ground yourself again when you return to the computer.

    • To prevent damage to the memory module connector, do not use tools to spread the memory-module securing clips.

    • Use your fingertips to carefully spread apart the securing clips on each end of the memory module connector until the module pops up.

    • Remove the module from the connector.

    • Insert memory modules at a 45-degree angle to avoid damaging the connector. If the memory module is not installed properly, the computer may not boot properly. No error message indicates this failure.

    • Ground yourself and install the new memory module by aligning the notch in the module edge connector with the tab in the connector slot.

    • Slide the module firmly into the slot, and rotate the module down until it clicks into place. If you do not feel the click, remove the module and reinstall it.

    • If you're willing to replace or install the memory module/chip in the DIMM B connector, only insert or replace the keyboard and hinge cover.

    • Insert or replace the keyboard, hinge cover, and battery on the computer respectively.

    • After turning on your computer, it should detect the amount of RAM installed, if RAM is installed correctly.

    • If you haven't done so, shut down your computer. Disconnect all power sources before opening the computer cover or panels. Remove the battery afterward.

    • Turn the computer upside-down, loosen the captive screw on the memory module cover (see image), and remove the cover.

    • To prevent damage to the memory module connector, do not use tools to spread the memory-module securing clips.

    • If you are replacing a memory module, remove the existing module by using your fingertips to carefully spread apart the securing clips on each end of the memory module connector until the module pops up.

    • Remove the module from the connector.

    • Insert memory modules at a 45-degree angle to avoid damaging the connector. If the memory module is not installed properly, the computer may not boot properly. No error message indicates this failure.

    • For optimal performance, identical memory modules should be used in each connector.

    • Ground yourself and install the new memory module by aligning the notch in the module edge connector with the tab in the connector slot.

    • Slide the module firmly into the slot, and rotate the module down until it clicks into place. If you do not feel the click, remove the module and reinstall it.

    • Replace the memory module cover.

    • If the cover is difficult to close, remove the module and reinstall it. Forcing the cover to close may damage your computer.

    • Insert the battery into the battery bay, or connect the AC adapter (charger) to your computer and an electrical outlet.

    • Turn on the computer.

    • After turning on your computer, it should detect the amount of RAM installed, if RAM is installed correctly.
