Why is a H1.3 being used here when the screws look like TORX?

    Stuart Kerr - Antwort

They are in fact TORX bits. A T5 driver fit neatly.

    Matthew Cole - Antwort

On my watch, it was T6. T5 is pretty loose.

    Frederic Huebner Jr - Antwort

Thanks for that perfect replacement guide.

    Lucian Cajacob - Antwort

    is a t6 torx not a t5 or a H1.3!!

    roter spieler - Antwort

Ifixit description for Fenix 3 (without HR) says t6, which is correct. The two screws inside are however t5.

Is there a trick to attaching Ribon back on?

    brad - Antwort

The GPS antenna is truly loose. It is not attached at all, but has to pins that guide it to a physical contact to the motherboard. It will literally fall out if you turn the open watch over. Replacement can only go one way.

    Frederic Huebner Jr - Antwort

The ribbon connection end just needs to be used pulled up. No need of force.

    Asif Shafiq - Antwort

    Trick to reattaching?

    brad - Antwort

You do not need to disconnect the motherboard for this, and it is challenging to reconnect without risking damage. Recommend leave it attached and move onto next step

    Mark - Antwort

Hi Mark, can you still remove the 5mm screw adjacent to the ribbon if you will just leave it attached?

    Benjo Rulona -

You can remove the display ribbon cable by gently going back and forth with tweezers lifting each side of the connector. It pops straight up off of the motherboard. I initially did not remove this, but then had some issues later with attaching the batter so I removed it. Reconnection just requires lining it up and press with your thumb. It will “click/pop” when it snaps into the connector when reattaching.

    I needed a T4 for these screws

Fenix 3 does not have this ribbon.

    Asif Shafiq - Antwort

Fenix 3 HR does. It goes to the HR reader in the back of the case. The connector was covered by tape so I did not disconnect this. Just be careful not to pull on the cable.

The battery connector just needs to be used pulled up. No need of force.

    Asif Shafiq - Antwort

Yes, not pulled backwards, just straight up. I wish I had seen this comment before hand. Maybe Victor could add it to the notes? Otherwise a great guide.

I broke the black piece off the motherboard….. is this fixable?

    Paul Kadletz - Antwort

Did you find an answer to this? It was disconnected when I pulled the motherboard off. That is the reason it was not working for me.

    Steven Wilson -

This was the most challenging part. It actually took a surprising amount of force with the pointed tweezers to lift this straight up off of the connector. It does not slide in/out to the wire side, but comes straight up off the connector. I thought for sure I was going to break it. I think you could pull up on the wires of the old battery but you may pull the wires out it was so tight. That really doesn’t matter because you are going to dispose of the old battery.

    Frederic Huebner Jr - Antwort

this really teh messy part. Even after I broke the connector from the mainboard I was not able to remove the white part from the black one. so now this is the end for my Garmin fenix 3HR .

    lars zimmermann - Antwort

The battery I received from iFixit doesn’t work with my Garmin Fenix 3 HR watch. Once installed the watch does not turn on. Plugging it in to charger give me Garmin logo and then 100% Battery indicator. However when I remove from Charger, watch shuts off again. iFixit sent me two different batteries, but they are the same model number (CS-GMF300SH). Again, these batteries don’t work with my Garmin Fenix 3 HR. My original Garmin battery still works in watch, it’s just no longer staying charged much longer than about 4-5 days, hence my attempt to replace.

    gregwhiteshark - Antwort

Had the same issue, not iFixit batteriets though, but got the logo, 100% battery indicated but instant death after removal from charger. Everything worked fine after i reopened and reattatched the power cable from the battery to the motherboard. Im guessing the fault could be a simple loss of connection between the motherboard and the battery during reassembly. Just try again…

    Per Jansson -

Like others, I wasted about 15 minutes trying to detach this connector sideways rather than upwards. It would be helpful to refer to this in the instructions.

    George Allan - Antwort

The black connector was not attached to my motherboard other than through the tiny pins. They snapped right off as soon as I touched it. Goodbye, unless I cut of the connector from the battery (without short circuit) and solder the cable to the motherboard.

    Björn Sjögren - Antwort

I managed to solder it. I took the wires from the old battery and soldered it to the motherboard. Then I cut the connector of the new battery put on heat shrink tubing and soldered it to the cables. It was not easy, very fiddly. Would not recommend to newbies, but at least it’s possible so don’t throw away the watch if this happens, sell it for cheap to some fiddle guy.

This was pretty easy to remove. More of a double sided piece of gummy tape or something. However, the battery from iFixIt does not have the tape so I carefully pealed the tape off of the old battery as I could not find any double sided tape at my house.

Where is everyone getting batteries from? I purchased one off Amazon and it only lasted two hours after charging overnight. Thank you

    jerry quintana - Antwort

The battery connector PRESSES in from the top. It does not slide in.

    Gale Otterholt - Antwort

What type of glue should we use to glue back the battery?

    paul homberger - Antwort

As Gale commented, the connector presses straight down onto the connector. I had a hard time getting both sides of the connector down. It will be level with the top of the black “dock” on the motherboard when it is all the way in. One side on my new battery went in easily, but it took some force to push the other side in. When you reassemble, do a test with no screws in to make sure the watch powers on. The battery has to be pretty well pressed against what I think is the vibrator motor on the left in the picture above (covered by the guy’s fingers) or the motherboard won’t fit back in the case. Easy to spot if it is not in the correct position when you try to reinstall the motherboard/battery.

When reinserting the motherboard, I had to insert one end first. I think it is the side on the right in the picture above. It would not go straight down into the case. Take this opportunity to wipe off the gasket around the case.

    Frederic Huebner Jr - Antwort

Any additional information on the glue/adhesive type that should be used? Thanks.

    Shawn Williams - Antwort

    Johannes Wolter - Antwort

Be careful when reassembling the motherboard to press firmly to make sure that the charging pegs touch the bays on the motherboard, otherwise it will NOT recharge for lack of electrical contact.

Does anybody do It in a fenix 5?

Fernando Alcaraz - Antwort

Same question. Fenix five /+ guide on the way?

Erik E123 -

Thank you. It saved me around over £100 to change the battery myself. Garmin quoted around £121 for battery replacement for out of warranty watch. I bought the battery around £15 and followed the guide to change the battery myself in my Fenix 3 watch. My watch does not have heart rate monitor, perhaps the ribon at step 5 is for HR monitor as I didn’t have it in my watch. Thanks again for simple, detailed and easy to follow instructions.

Asif Shafiq - Antwort

Where did you get the battery?

Alex -

Amazon or other 3 Party Sellerie use google for search the are tonns of Shops wich sell it

Andreas Kahl -

Howdy,

Followed all your steps but now the new battery will not charge. Could I have missed something in replacing the battery somehow? Pins not making contact or so?

Adrian - Antwort

I had a similar issue, I think you need to make sure the screws on the battery board are firmly tightened. Seems odd but worked for me

adagnall -

I’ve just followed these steps, and with £4.50 for a precision torx set, and £14.50 for a battery that came the next day by UPS, it’s saved me loads. The couple of things I would add are - you can use double sided tape to attached the new battery, and buy a battery with the connector already attached unless you are an electrician it saves the fuss, and make sure the connector is fully in place, it’s easy for it to be marginally out and you’ll get no power.

thanks!

Jason Clarke - Antwort

Can you please post a link to a suitable battery? especially that one with the “already attached solution” seems very interessting to me :) Thank you!

Do you think there’s room to put a larger MaH battery in there?

Thank you very much. Clear and easy to follow. I would only add there how to detach the battery. Not to pull but pull up from the motherboard.

Thanks

What about the seal after replacement ? Is it preserved so water does not pernetrate ?

Has anyone had issues with the waterproofing after this repair?

Hi,

thank you, that helps a lot!

Are there no new seals necessary and is the Garmin still waterproof?

Thanks!

In my fenix 5 the battery connector is welded to the socket. Impossible to extract.

Alessandro Rossi - Antwort

Ciao Alessandro,

a breve cambierò la batteria. Davvero hai trovato i connettori saldati??

Grazie.

I’m looking for a guide for replacing the heart rate sensor on a fenix 5X. The resin covering the sensor is starting to crack and deteriorate after only a year and a half of use.

bat21 - Antwort

I know my Fenix 3HR had an issue similar to this on the sensor. It was a known defect with Garmin and they replaced my watch. I’d check with their customer service.

I bought new battery replaced it with this instructions. Everything is working but the problem is that the new battery is weaker than the old one. It is discharging much more faster. Could it be that I need it to charge couple of times to see? Has anyone had this problem with new battery?

Hello,

does the fenix 5 battery fit the fenix 3?

Felvégi Richárd - Antwort

Be very careful when disconnecting the wires that connects battery to motherboard (step 6). In my case the black socket broke off from the motherboard. Watch destroyed :-(

Hello,

Great tutorial! Can someone please tell where can I find a replacement battery for Fenix 3HR?

Thank you so much!

Alexandru Octavian - Antwort

Thank you so much for the information as Garmin Australia was absolutely no help at all when I asked them how to free the buttons that wouldn't move on my Fenix 3 watch. They said to soak it in a bowl of warm water for 10 minutes, remove and airdry, which did and absolutely no results. I re-phoned Garmin Australia and they said to purchase another watch, the Fenix 7 and they would give me a 20% discount. My watch initally cost $NZ1750 and you would think Garmin would have a service department, but apparently not. That's the last Garmin I will ever purchase and that includes any marine navigation products.
