If your flared corduroy pants are too long here is the guide for you! This guide will use simple hand stitching techniques and few sewing materials to raise the hem of your pants to your desired length. You may have been experiencing heel bite or damage to the bottom of your pants; or maybe they are just too long. This guide will help you fix your pants while keeping the professional look of the original hem. This guide only requires basic sewing knowledge. Because of the specific cut and fabric of the pants, tailoring can often be expensive, but this guide will walk you through how to do it all on your own.

Wear the pants.

Place a pin where you want your end length to be.

Measure the distance with a ruler from the original hem to the pin.

Mark your new hemline with the white pen and remove the pin.

Measure the length of the original hem.

From your new hemline mark, measure below 3x the length of your original hem.

Mark it on the pants.

Draw a line across the width of the pant leg at the mark you just made.

Fold up the raw edge halfway to the new hemline mark.

Then fold it again so the raw edge is enclosed.

Place sewing pins parallel to the fold to hold it in place. Continue this around the pant leg until there are pins along the entire fold.

How to back stitch: Bring the needle up from the back of the fabric at (1). Insert the needle down in the fabric at (2). Bring the needle up at (3), which is the same distance as that between (1) and (2). Thread the needle back down (4) in the previous hole (2). Insert the needle back up (5).

Insert the needle into the fold.

Sew close, using the backstitch, to create the new hem. Remove the pins as you go.

Once you sew along the entire circumference and are back at where you started, secure the hem using a square knot to tie it off. Then cut off the excess string.

Repeat steps 2–7 for the other pant leg, using the same measurements as the pant leg you just completed.
