    • Unscrew the tassel and set aside.

    • Using a flathead screwdriver, open the cord stop, remove from the strings, and set aside.

  2. How to Restring Cellular Shades: Schritt 2, Bild 1 von 1
    • Close the shade and push up, sliding the shade out toward the center of the room.

    • This is a common method for taking down a cellular shade but not all shades are hung the same way. Use the appropriate method for your shade.

    • Place the shade on a flat surface to work on.

  3. How to Restring Cellular Shades: Schritt 3, Bild 1 von 2 How to Restring Cellular Shades: Schritt 3, Bild 2 von 2
    • Measure and cut the new nylon strings. To be safe, the length should be equal to the sum of the window width and twice the window height. There will be excess string and it will be cut off in step 14.

    • Length = (Window Width) + 2*(Window Height)

  4. How to Restring Cellular Shades: Schritt 4, Bild 1 von 3 How to Restring Cellular Shades: Schritt 4, Bild 2 von 3 How to Restring Cellular Shades: Schritt 4, Bild 3 von 3
    • Use the flathead screwdriver to take the end caps off of the top rail and set aside.

    • Take out the screw using the phillips screwdriver and slide the top rail off.

    • Using the needle nose pliers, push the cord lock clips in from the side and slide the cord lock out, removing the strings and setting the cord lock aside.

This step will require a large vocabulary of cusswords. I nearly broke mine, getting it out, as the clips refused to bend inward. This is one of those “looks easier than it is” kind of things. But… it’s very-correct on what needs to happen, here. :)

I would have to agree. It's a very simple concept, yet the clips on mine did not and would not simply press in so it could come out. Many, many cuss words. Throwing of pliers, flat head screwdrivers, whatever was within reach to throw. Walked away from it. Came back to it. Many, many times. Ended up breaking the top outer lip of the lock. Didn't affect the lock or how it sits, so I was ok with that.

    • Flip the shade over and pull the end caps off of the bottom rail. Set them aside.

    • Slide the bottom rail off and set aside.

  6. How to Restring Cellular Shades: Schritt 6, Bild 1 von 2 How to Restring Cellular Shades: Schritt 6, Bild 2 von 2
    • Untie the ends of the strings between the weights on the bottom of the shade.

    • Pull the strings out of the shade and discard.

  7. How to Restring Cellular Shades: Schritt 7, Bild 1 von 3 How to Restring Cellular Shades: Schritt 7, Bild 2 von 3 How to Restring Cellular Shades: Schritt 7, Bild 3 von 3
    • Thread the new string through the restringing needle.

    • Pull the needle and thread through the shade, making sure to leave three inches out of the bottom side of the shade.

    • Repeat for the other strings.

  8. How to Restring Cellular Shades: Schritt 8, Bild 1 von 2 How to Restring Cellular Shades: Schritt 8, Bild 2 von 2
    • Tie a knot with the 3 inch piece and pull the string tight.

    • Repeat for the other strings.

  9. How to Restring Cellular Shades: Schritt 9, Bild 1 von 3 How to Restring Cellular Shades: Schritt 9, Bild 2 von 3 How to Restring Cellular Shades: Schritt 9, Bild 3 von 3
    • Slide the bottom rail back onto the shade.

    • Push the bottom end caps back onto the rail.

If old, the cloth-fabric can easily “catch” on the end, as you slide the rail on and along. Just be careful and go slowly. May need to retry this step several times to get the rail full on.

  10. How to Restring Cellular Shades: Schritt 10, Bild 1 von 1
    • Turn the top rail over so that the top is on the work surface.

    • Thread the strings through the small gap in the top rail that the cord lock was removed from.

    • The ends of the strings should be on the outer side of the top rail.

  11. How to Restring Cellular Shades: Schritt 11, Bild 1 von 3 How to Restring Cellular Shades: Schritt 11, Bild 2 von 3 How to Restring Cellular Shades: Schritt 11, Bild 3 von 3
    • Restring the cord lock by first picking up the strings coming out of the cord lock gap. Thread them through the side opening of the cord lock and out of the back opening.

    • Thread them back through the back opening and out of the front opening. Make sure to pass the strings through the black rectangular piece inside the cord lock.

    • Pull the strings tight so that the strings are only in the front and side openings.

  12. How to Restring Cellular Shades: Schritt 12, Bild 1 von 3 How to Restring Cellular Shades: Schritt 12, Bild 2 von 3 How to Restring Cellular Shades: Schritt 12, Bild 3 von 3
    • Insert the cord lock into the gap in the top rail with the opaque plastic side facing up.

    • Lay the strings down the middle of the shade.

    • Slide the top rail onto the shade, pulling the strings tight through the cord lock.

    • The end of the rail without the cord lock should be slid on first.

  13. How to Restring Cellular Shades: Schritt 13, Bild 1 von 2 How to Restring Cellular Shades: Schritt 13, Bild 2 von 2
    • Use the phillips screwdriver to put the screw back into the top rail.

    • Push the end caps back into place.

  14. How to Restring Cellular Shades: Schritt 14, Bild 1 von 2 How to Restring Cellular Shades: Schritt 14, Bild 2 von 2
    • Rehang the shade by pushing the shade up into the clips and sliding it towards the window.

    • This is a common method for rehanging cellular shades but not all shades are hung the same way. Use the appropriate method for your shade.

    • Open the shade and cut the strings so the ends are halfway up the shade.

Clarification: open the shade really means to lower the shade, essentially covering the window, so that the cords are fully extended through the shade with the ends of the cords remaining exposed. Then cut the cord, if needed, at the halfway mark of your window height. If the new cords were measured alongside the old cord lengths, no cutting should be necessary.

    • Adjust the cord stop to your liking.

    • Slide the top half of the tassel over the ends of the strings and tie the ends together.

    • Screw the lower half of the tassel onto the top half.

Are the directions different for top down/bottom up shades?

Hi - thank you so much for this post. I followed it picture by picture and managed to restring my blind which was broken. I had been quoted NZ$150 to have it fixed so though - I may as well try to DIY and see how I went. I was nervous and had to go back and forth a few times with the steps but all in all it took me about an hour to do this job and I am so happy. String cost me NZ$12.99 and there’s plenty more to do another blind! Thank you again.

Tirzah, this is EXACTLY what I needed. My shades were slightly different (ie. the lock mechanism), but this gave me the general idea (and specifics in most areas) that helped me know how to tackle this! :) It wasn’t easy (took me 1.5 hours), but… it’s DONE! Thanks again!! :D Kurt

I’m trying to repair a cordless shade. It uses a spring ( a coil) but I haven’t been able to find a seller of this parts. Any help is welcome.

Where did you buy the replacement string?

Which is more durable, breaks less often or requires less frequent repair? Continuous cords or standard cords?
