As you can see by the photos, I took a broken and otherwise useless magsafe end and made a splice. After a resolder, the LED shows the computer charging.

  1. How to repair the MagSafe Magnetic End, How to repair the MagSafe Magnetic End: Schritt 1, Bild 1 von 1
    • This is a hyper extended end of a magsafe. It is no longer working due to the wire having pulled apart.

  2. How to repair the MagSafe Magnetic End: Schritt 2, Bild 1 von 1
    • Use wire cutters to cut the wire of the magsafe some distance back from the magnetic end. I cut about 4 inches back. You can get much closer like maybe an inch, as you will see in the next step.

  3. How to repair the MagSafe Magnetic End: Schritt 3, Bild 1 von 1
    • I used a utility knife to cut the nice white cover off the tiny printed circuit board. There is a molded plastic cover similar to hot glue which had to be stripped off the PCB.

  4. How to repair the MagSafe Magnetic End: Schritt 4, Bild 1 von 1
    • 1.) Take the good end of the existing wire and strip it.

    • 2.) The interior wire, which is coated in white should be soldered on a square metal plate about one eighth inch square. This plate is opposite a small chip for reference.

    • 3.) The braided wire coats the white interior wire, and is wrapped around it in two different directions. This wire should be peeled off and then twisted together.

    • 4.) Then solder it in place opposite the chip and the other wire.

    • Plug in wall outlet and install on computer to test.

    • At this point there are still exposed live wires carrying DC voltage. To eliminate risk of shock or shorting, cover the bare wires in electrical tape, heat shrink tubing, or Sugru.

To reassemble your device, follow these instructions in reverse order.

Thanks a lot for the tutorial, worked like a charm and the result is quite clean too. You made me save 80€!

Works but looks like !@#$.

If it looks stupid, but it works, then it's not stupid. I'm certain someone has the skill to make that end look good.

Awesome! I had not used my macbook for almost a month, since my magsafe quit working. I was afraid to cut into the plug, fearing I might damage the circuitry inside. Once I saw the pictures of the inside of the adapter, I knew the correct way to do it. Thank you for the tutorial. :)

Could you please make the same guide for a L connector?

I repaired my magsafe end and managed to back the white cover off and re-use it. I couldn't re-use the strain relief, but built up a facsimile using hot glue.

How would this be done for the new Magsafe 2 connection? This is aluminum, and not plastic....help would be appreciated!

Having bought a second one of these useless cables, I blue-tacked the connection in place and secured the cable along the side of the computer. Not pretty but at €90 a replacement, well worth it. You can also mould a pretty cover with Sugru.

Thanks. That gave me the courage to have a crack at it. Fixed it ok! Fortunately it was not necessary to open the intestines because only the (earth? neutral... well it was wire at least) around the core was worn out so I wacked a slither of copper across the 'break" and soldered it together. One thing bothers me though: Why do north Americans say 'sodder" rather than "solder"?

so i soldered it together and wacked a slither of copper across the 'break" and put electric-pvc-tape around..

got no ibook, is for a friend:

could someone with a working one check the voltages at the contacts: i only read around 3 volts..! is it defect??

-well the magnetic-part can have an electronic to check whether the adapter really is attached to the device and only then give 20v power-

biopilz - Antwort

correction: white electrical-pvc-tape around -very firmly-..

But, be careful; this might result in short circuit and burn the mother board of the laptop. My laptop is now dead, in this way..!
