Einleitung
Auf der Instrumententafel befinden sich eine Menge wichtiger Bauteile und früher oder später musst du sie für eine Reparatur ausbauen. Wenn du einige Tricks kennst, ist diese Arbeit garnicht so entmutigend. Diese Anleitung hilft dir dabei.
Was du brauchst

Klemme zuerst die Batterie ab, ziehe die negative Polklemme ab.

Entferne die untere Blende auf der Fahrerseite. Diese Anleitung hilft dir dabei.

Die Instrumententafel hält von alleine, es gibt keine Befestigungen.

Greife unter das Armaturenbrett, Taste dich an Kabeln und Isoliermaterial vorbei an die Rückseite der Instrumententafel heran. Drücke sie dann fest nach außen zum Steuerrad hin.

Wenn die Instrumententafel ein Stück weit herausgekommen ist, kannst du sie am oberen Rand weiter herauszuziehen.

Ziehe an der Tafel, bis du den Widerstand der Tacholeitung spürst.

Normalerweise ist kaum Platz, um mit der Hand hinter die Tafel zu greifen. Du musst um die Mitte der Tafel herum erfühlen, hinter und rechts von der Mitte der Tacholeitung, wo sie angeschlossen ist.

Sie ist mit einer Rändelmutter verschraubt. Löse sie mit der Hand, dafür sind keine Werkzeuge nötig. Schraube die Leitung ganz von der Instrumententafel ab.
If your hand still can't reach the speedo cable, go underneath the car and trace where the cable is clamped to the engine block. Detach this clamp with a screwdriver or pliers and this will release the cable to give your hand the extra inches to reach and unscrew the speedo cable from the rear of the instrument cluster. Remember to re-attach that clamp after.

Wenn die Tacholeitung gelöst ist, lässt sich die Instrumententafel noch weiter herauszuziehen, so dass mehr Platz zum Arbeiten entsteht.

Fange rechts an und löse alle Verbindungen.

Ziehe zuerst alle Glühbirnen heraus, die in die rechte Seite der Instrumententafel hineingesteckt sind. Beim Dieselmodell ist da noch die Kontrollleuchte für die Glühkerze und für den Sicherheitsgurt dabei. Ziehe dann den Flachstecker der Stromversorgung für die Uhr ab.

Ziehe als Nächstes die beiden kleineren Stecker nahe der Mitte der Instrumententafel ab.

Klemme den Anschluss der Ölanzeige mit einem 10 mm Schlüssel ab.

Trenne als Letztes den großen runden Stecker ganz links an der Tafel ab, unten und links von der Öffnung für die Ölanzeige.

Nachdem alle Anschlüsse gelöst sind, kannst du die Instrumententafel herausholen. Hebe sie vorsichtig nach oben am Lenkrad vorbei.

Jetzt sind alle Anschlüsse gut sichtbar:

Tachometer

Ölanzeige

Kleinere Stecker für Zubehör und Licht

Großer Hauptstecker

Nicht zu sehen sind sind die Kabel und Glühbirnen für die Glühkerze und den Sicherheitsgurt und der Flachstecker für die Uhr. Merke dir, welche Glühbirne wohin gehört, die Kabel haben unterschiedliche Farben. An diesem Fahrzeug war das Kabel für die Anzeige des Sicherheitsgurts grün und für die Glühkerze blau.

Jetzt kannst du mit der Instrumententafel zu deiner Werkbank gehen und die notwendigen Reparaturen durchführen.

Nicolas is right on with an excellent explanation and pictures. The insulation pad under the cluster is a pain, and I removed it in my car. It may be good in cold climates. Nicolas posted on 1984 Mercedes-Benz W123 power window relay replacement? 3/26/15 the best answer for stuck windows. The relay is many times the reason windows get stuck and dont go up or down. No other forum has addressed that which is so important. You need to pull the instrument cluster half way by disconecting the speedometer cable ONLY. Then you can replace the window relay. Of course first you check the fuses, then you can check the door panel to see if the motor is working by disconnecting the motor wires and testing it up with a 12 v or 18 v battery from a power tool, then you check the switches, I usually replace them by extra ones that are in working condition. Then finally if nothing works I go and replace the window relay.

Excellent Tutorial with great details. Glad I found because didn't know about: "There is a constant 12v supply of power to your car's clock, even when the key is off. If you attempt to pull the cluster out with the battery connected you will burn up part of your cluster's circuit board, or worse yet hurt yourself." Thanks!

Any chance you can tell us what color of wires goes on each of the 15 pins from the large primary plug (Cluster pins) or even show a picture of where it all goes? Some of my wires got mixed up and it's really hard to tell which wires goes to what pins...
FYI I have a 85' CD300 if that helps. ;-)

Does it matter what direction the accessory plug on the speedometer is plugged in? It seems to go on both ways and I'm not sure if I am installing it right!

Nicolas - your post of 2/4/16 with the link to a diagram of the wire colors of the 15 pin plug may well be correct for SOME MB - but it’s surely not what I have in my 94 E320!!! I’ve been chasing my tail (actually trying to isolate a short in the coolant temp gauge - which is the green wire at #2 - one of the colors on mine that happens to match the diagram you referenced) for some MONTHS - since paying a local shop to replace the infamous BIODEGRADABLE engine wiring harness. What a FIASCO - MB should be TARRED and FEATHERED for this one!
Hi all, I have a 1983 240D, replaced my fuel gauge, oil pressure gauge and temp. gauge from a 1984 300D. My cluster is exactly like the one pictured above. I would like to know what is that relay next to the oil pressure connection for because the 300D odometer doesn’t have it, but everything seems to work fine. If someone knows please let me know, thanks.
