Opening the Logitech M170 Outer Casing

Was du brauchst

  1. Opening the Logitech M170 Outer Casing, Remove the bottom cover: Schritt 1, Bild 1 von 1
    • Switch off the mouse and slide out the bottom cover. This is where all the necessary clips can be accessed.

  2. Opening the Logitech M170 Outer Casing, Remove the battery and sticker: Schritt 2, Bild 1 von 1
    • Remove the battery and sticker. There are a total of 3 clips that need to be released. Two are just on the sides. The third one is under the sticker inside the battery's chamber. Logitech commonly hides extra fastening points in a similar place in their other wireless mice.

    • You may need tweezers to remove the sticker easily.

    • We'll release the clips in the next step.

  3. Opening the Logitech M170 Outer Casing, Unfasten the clips: Schritt 3, Bild 1 von 3 Opening the Logitech M170 Outer Casing, Unfasten the clips: Schritt 3, Bild 2 von 3 Opening the Logitech M170 Outer Casing, Unfasten the clips: Schritt 3, Bild 3 von 3
    • Identify the clips. The plastic of the top cover is a different color from the plastic of the base. You can identify the clips from their color (should be the color of the top cover. Here, they are black).

    • When you've identified the clips, pull them outward/away from the center (see image) to release them.

    • You can use any small tool but the plastic may be a bit soft so do this carefully if don't want to wear the clips out.

    I cantt, it wont open

    Mine doesnt have clips.

    very tricky , struggling here

    John Fleming - Antwort

With the two side clips, it’s not the T-shaped outer bits that need to be pressed, it’s the thicker part lower down. It takes a bit of force to move the clips, but of course care is required.

    Mike Van Emmerik - Antwort

Thank you. I was struggling with the T shaped parts.

    Efe Muratal -

best tip: use a screw driver to uncover the bottom clip first. then use your nail to hold it in place(the bottom lid).

    Then use your screw driver (for side clips) to push both the t shaped outer bits with the grey colored bits away from the center.{use the screw driver as a leverage against the outer covering}

then bada bing bada boom its open

  4. Opening the Logitech M170 Outer Casing, Pop off the top cover: Schritt 4, Bild 1 von 3 Opening the Logitech M170 Outer Casing, Pop off the top cover: Schritt 4, Bild 2 von 3 Opening the Logitech M170 Outer Casing, Pop off the top cover: Schritt 4, Bild 3 von 3
    • After you've released the 3 clips, you should be free to pop the top cover right off. You can help it along by pushing on one of the clips.

    • After the back part pops off, slide the whole top cover forward a little. (There are two more hooks in front of the mouse where the buttons are, that normally prevent you from pulling the buttons upward.) That should let you remove the whole thing.

  5. Opening the Logitech M170 Outer Casing, Enjoy the insides: Schritt 5, Bild 1 von 3 Opening the Logitech M170 Outer Casing, Enjoy the insides: Schritt 5, Bild 2 von 3 Opening the Logitech M170 Outer Casing, Enjoy the insides: Schritt 5, Bild 3 von 3
    • From here, you should be able to do your repairs on the internals.

    • Interesting thing to note: Logitech switched some of their higher-end mice to high-quality Omron switches. But this, being a $12-ish mouse, seems to use microswitches from Himake. The actuation force feels noticeably higher vs Omron switches. Durability is up for testing and debate. I personally haven't owned this mouse long enough to tell.

    • I like how it was screwless and didn't have any adhesives. It makes it really easy to put back together and it means there are fewer things to lose or keep track of.

  6. Opening the Logitech M170 Outer Casing, Put it back together: Schritt 6, Bild 1 von 2 Opening the Logitech M170 Outer Casing, Put it back together: Schritt 6, Bild 2 von 2
    • To put the top cover back on, attach the front hooks first before snapping the back clips.

    • Press down on the palm part of the top cover gently to snap the back clips into place.

    • Obviously, you'll need to put back the battery and removable bottom panel too. I also reattached the sticker but placed it higher so the clip in the battery chamber is exposed. I wasn't sure if I would need it later.

Front, as in towards the wheel end.

My mouse wheel is loose so I cannot scroll using my mouse is there a way that one can tighten it since I've opened it n the mouse wheel just came out.

Vee - Antwort

The same happened to mine, so I used a little bit of super bonder to attached again the wheel to the spinning sensor. Problem solved.

Thanks man! Your instructions were very useful. Without them, I don't think I would succeeded in fixing my mouse. The optics sensor was just out of place. My mouse is working perfectly now. Thanks again.

samuel.ibrahim - Antwort

Same! They probably came out from falling on the floor, but putting the loose light back on to the transparent thingy thing definitely did the trick.

the clips on the side arent clipping out

can someone tell me where the usb receiver is?

Yunus Lawi - Antwort

Thanks for demystifying how to open! There is no power getting to the board but I can 't see any break from the terminal to the board so guess I can"t fix it.

suzan - Antwort

Thanks! Releasing the clips wasn’t easy, but it worked in the end. (I have a M171.) Unfortunately, I couldn’t find anything abnormal while ‘enjoying the insides’, so I didn’t manage to fix it. Do you have any suggestion what I should look at, or what broken parts could be fixed? I guess the mouse just fell on the floor too often, and something is irreparably broken.

Els - Antwort

Thanks ! After release the clips, I found that an internal component was out of place. Now, the mouse works perfect !

Manuel Espejo - Antwort

add close view of shape of clip/snap on so that user knows which side to press for unlocking three latches.

I have an M170 mouse, but aside from the underside look, mine has NO “3 clips” anywhere. And the top does not come off. I put the battery in and no sign of light so must be something wrong. There are no visible “clips”.

GARY MATTHEWS - Antwort

Hi, Before I try opening my M325(hopefully it has similar clips) I want to ask if the issue I am facing is a hardware issue, My mouse registers a double click when I actually do a single click. It is very frustrating as sometime when I try to close an overlapping window , it closes some other application behind it :( . I have tried changing the double click speed setting in the control panel mouse options but no luck.

Srirang Netake - Antwort

for some reason the wheel button stopped working, i opened, cleaned it a bit (it had like 4 years of dust, crumbles and hairs) and magically it started working again (not perfectly, but good enough to avoid spending money on a new one or bother soldering stuff)

Mauro Santopietro - Antwort

Man i atach hooks last but its still working perfectly

SRDS 7 - Antwort

Thanks! I cleaned the wheel and it’s working now.

I was able to open my M170 with instructions from this page. Very helpful. I was trying to see if I could fix the problem with my mouse: When I scroll using the wheel, the page would quickly jump up when I meant to scroll down. I was not able to fix it. Any help? The left-click, right-click and center clicks are fine, but the scroll wheel is something else. When I scroll, the page tends to jump up and down first before following my scroll. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

is there a way to reset the mouse?

Mohammed Zameil - Antwort

Why do you need to reset it?

Daniele Carminati -

just pull off battery. To be sure, with something metallic connect both + and - terminals on the battery compartiment for a 5 secs while mouse switch is in ON position.

—-why do you need it?

My mouse works fine for 10-15 minutes. then stops working abruptly. It works again a few hours or a day later for 10-15 minutes, and then again stops. I didn’t see anything abnormal on the inside. Any tips?

Anonymous - Antwort

Maybe some faulty capacitors?

Daniele Carminati -

John muchas gracias, necesitaba limpiar este mouse para que funcionara de nuevo como nuevo.

Ya estaba enfadado de la falta de precision, una limpieza con cepillo y alcohol isopropilico resolvio todo.

Thanks man, this was a gem

Hi My M170 works well initially but after some time a message pops up on the screen and says that the USB drive you just inserted is malfunctioned.

Trouble shooting done so far - Driver update in the laptop, firm ware of laptop updated not able to update the firm ware of mouse as the tool does not recognize it.

Please help.

mankuagrawal - Antwort

thanks for this. the scroll wheel has gotten loose on my mouse, and i used this tutorial to diagnose the problem. fixed now! if youre havinig trouble loosening the clips, try wedging a small, flat tool under the side clips and turning until it pops up. it needs more force than you think you should use. the bottom clip pops out a lot easier if you do the side ones first.

Thanks for sharing this! Needed to open it to clean the battery coil due to a battery leakage. All set!

Dear author, thanks for the hints. This article helped me to figure out how to tear down my Logi M190 mouse and the trickiest step was to remove the sticker inside the battery slot and remove the tiny screw.
