Cpu fan at 100% when startup/boot

Hi

I have really searched the web and read MANY threads about this issue. Haven't found the solution yet.

So i figured. Let's ask the guys at ifixit.

I've done the apple hardware test. Canme back with this:

4MOT /4/40000002:CPU-0

Any one got a clue? Can't seem to figure out the errorcode....

Best regards

Bjørn

You have a blown fan the error indicates the CPU fan is not running at all or, possibly, that the CPU fan is working but not reporting correctly. You have a fan(s) running at 100% to try to cool the CPU. (could be the HDD or ODD fan). A 3rd Party Fan app. might tell you (iStat or FanControl).

Don't cook the CPU... Replace the fan.

Error 4MOT it's a motor (fan) error: if it ends in HDD it relates to the HDD fan, if it ends with CPU, to the CPU fan, if it ends with ODD, to the Optical DD fan. The number at the end is the actual rpm for the fan. The error is generated if the actual fan speed is outside the +/- 10% allowance for the target speed, so the last zero in the code is the fan speed!

So what you say is that all i have to do is replace the cpu fan? I've tested several fan programs. All telling me that the fan is not running. But it sure does. No need changing the logic board? Or any sensors?

There's more than 1 fan in these machines... 3 actually. The other 2 might be trying to compensate for the 1

I have the same problem: the cpu run at full speed istat show 0 rpm and get the same hardware test error is it sure that is the cpu fan defected or motherboard sensor?

Hi

Replacing the cpu fan didn´t go as i hoped. Still max sped at boot. Now i found that the odd fan is doing the same thing.

Is there a separate sensor for that/those fans? Or is it the logic board that controls them?

Does your fan still keep blowing high when you're on Desktop? Did this begin to happen after any upgrade you performed? If not, the sensor is to be reseated to test if that corrects the issue. If not, replace. Open the unit and visibly observe the fan and corresponding sensor you work on.

if it is the cpu fan i am lucky but i suspect is the fan circuit of the logic board. If it is the logic board fan circuit or cpu sensor i would get an error at hardware test??
