Replace Superdrive with SSD HD but which interface?

Hi,

I want to remove the Superdrive from my A1260 and replace it with a SSD harddrive 128GB Crucial v4 SATA but i am in doubt what connection the superdrive has. If it has IDE or SATA. On ebay i found this and this but which one is it ?

Can somebody shed some light on this ?

The superdrive is connected via SATA. There are companies selling drive bay kits, just google it. IMHO it is better to replace the startup disk with the SSD, put your system and apps on it and put a beefy data disk in the optical drive bay.

Rem - I agree making the SSD the boot volume makes a lot of sense! Depending on the MacBook Pro he has he might not need to swap the drives around. If he has a PATA optical unit then swapping the HD over to the optical bay is a very good idea. If he has a SATA optical unit then its a toss-up.

Correction, i've been wrong - the optical drive is of course connected via PATA, which makes this solution less feasable, since PATA hard drives are slow and expensive by todays standarts.

Sorry for the misinformation.

Rem - Well your right getting a PATA drive would likely be more expensive & harder to find. But, in this case the I/O speed will be limited to the optical carriers I/O limits not the drives. The HD your using within the carrier is a SATA in both cases. The PATA carrier converts the I/O to SATA for the HD. Even with that said the speed of the OS loading & running Via SSD directly via the HD SATA I/O connector would be better (moving the SATA HD to the PATA Optical drive carrier). If you have a SATA optical drive swapping the HD over to the carrier will be hard to see,

If you go to the Apple icon in the finder menu and select 'About This Mac" you'll find a button "More Info" which will launch the system profiler app Profiler. Within it look up your optical player under 'Disk Burning' Do you have a ATAPI (PATA/IDE) unit or a ATA unit? I suspect you have a ATAPI (PATA/IDE) unit so you need a unit that converts SATA to PATA (SATA HD).

iFixIt also offers a SATA to PATA unit which is known to fit the MacBook Pros.

I'm not sure if unit you have a link for will work as its marked for a Compaq not MacBook Pro. The other link offers a SATA to SATA unit and is listed for a MacBook Pro, which I don't think is what you need here.

I agree with Dan's answer. Once you confirm wether its ATAPI or SATA, here are the links for either of them:

Why not a 256gb crucial sata drive, and less messing about!!!

Geof - Not sure I follow you here HD disk Vs a SSD. If size and price is the factor here an HD Disk is better. Sure, a SSD is faster, but has a limit in storage size and is more costly.
