MacBook boots up to grey screen and nothing else?

I picked up a MacBook mid-2007 2.1 GHz from a friend. He said it wouldn't boot up and Mac Authority wanted $500 for a bottom case replacement. The MacBook is in decent condition but when the power button is pressed it boots up to a white screen and nothing more. I have tried the standard troubleshooting techniques, safe mode, external hard drive, install disc, PRAM, etc. and none of it does anything. A chime can be heard when booted up and i have tested all the connectors but it does the same thing each time. The only thing if find weird is that there is absolutely no hard drive activity. You hear the platters spinning but the arm doesn't move. I have tried different hard drives and they all seem the exhibit the same behavior. My next step will be to swap logic boards with an identical MacBook and see what that does. If anyone has had a similar issue or can shed any light on the issue it would be appreciated.

Thanks

13" MacBook Pros have a Sata cable and Hard Disk Drive (HDD) problem. They fail!

I have watched a MacBook Pro fail and the result is a Grey Screen Of Death (GSOD). I verified the HDD and the OS X Disk Utility report said the HDD was fine. Apple said that a Disk Utility verification is no indication of the status of the HDD.

2009 models are victim of this problem so yours may be something else.

I installed a known working SATA cable and got the same result. I cant even boot or eject the disc that is in it (The mouse button didn't work so i just had to eject it from another computer) I am thinking that this may be th elogic board. The strange thing is that the hard drive that came with it will not boot up on other macs and gives the cancel sign or the blinking folder. I am wondering if this mac needs firmware. That will be my next test.

Follow Up: It turned out to actually be the logic board. The person's son had spilled some water on it and had not realized it. I replaced the logic board and everything is working very well now.
