What do I need to do to boot my water damaged iPhone?

Block Image

hi everyone i dropped my iphone 3gs in water a few days ago and dried it out using rice and after that it booted up once but now it only shows any signs of life when i plug it into my wall charger where it shows an apple logo and it keeps flashing like its trying to boot up and i left it on charge overnight to no avail though the phone was really warm.so i have opened it up and the motherboard looks fine with no corrosion though i havent removed the motherboard yet and was thinking about cleaning it with my RGP contact lens cleaner if this is possible can someone let me know. i think the battery is damaged and i need a new one as it looks like there is not enough power to boot up the phone and also now the phone has no backlight though the motherboard looks brand new so does it need a new lcd or can something else be the problem as i have moved to saudia arabia for work less than a month ago and i dont really know where to go or how to communicate my iphone problems to someone so i really need to fix it soon or find the root of the problem to boot it up and fix the backlight so i can look for the right parts and be able to synch all my data which is really important to me. if someone could please help i would be very grateful.

jd1, the first step I recommend is that you stop using it all together for now. the more you try to start it and to use it, the more you can damage. Do not use any of the RGP contact lens cleaner to clean it. you will damage the components further. You definitely want to clean it properly. Use this guide to get it cleaned. It is written for a 3G but applies to your phone as well. Next thing to do is to replace the battery after that, reassemble and re-evaluate. Should your screen still be dim, replace the LCD first. It is possible that your backlight has short circuited. If it remains dim, you most likely have shortened the 6R8 backlight coil. It is soldered unto the logic board. Here is a good video on how to fix that. If you do have trouble getting the proper isopropyl alcohol, due to your geographical location, I would suggest sterile water. Hope this helps, good luck. Hope this helps, good luck.

hi thanks for your help and i was wondering if i upload some pictures of my iphone logic board if you could determine whether anything is damaged or has corrosion as my eyesight is really bad and i could do with some help with what needs cleaning and thanks for your help and advice

von

also the guide says to completely submerge the logic board in isopropyl alcohol though if i cant obtain the alcohol and i use the sterile water should i not submerge the logic board as this could cause further damage and just use a soft brush to rub all the corrosion off? also would soaking it in alcohol cause further damage or not?

von

It will work if you submerge it as long as it is sterile water or a high grade isopropyl alcohol, it will not be conducive. Most of us prefer alcohol because it will displace water :-) Images are always a big help

hi thanks for all your help and i have a little bit of good news i openede up the iphone and cleaned it a little with just a clean toothbrush and tried turning it on and the backlight is no longer dim so at least i know the lcd is working though the phone still refuses to boot and evrytime i turn it on it jst flashes the apple logo for a second then turns back off and it only does this when on charge so i wanted to know if you think i should still submerge it in alcohol or replace the battery or what and i appreciate all your help also i have taken a few photos of the logic board if you could take a little look and tell me what you think i would be very grateful thanks

von

Thanks for the images. Looks to me like there is still some corrosion (could just be the glare of the flash:-) in image number 2 it looks like the SM components, especially around the power management IC still show corrosion. I would proceed with the original plan and use alcohol and a soft brush. I recommend to always replace the battery with any immersion. Hope this helps you further. Sounds like you are on the right track.
