As I discovered just now, the Matshita superdrive in my macbook Pro can't burn DL disks. Are there replacements available for this macbook model that can do so?

You can. Try Sony, Taiyo-Yuden, or Ritek to burn DL. Search a bit to get the right part otherwise it won't work.
