Running disassembled, to check replaced inverter

I have followed all 46 steps to replace the inverter in my MacBook 2006 A1181.

MacBook Core 2 Duo Inverter Replacement

Now I have it taken apart and have my cheap replacement inverter swapped-in plus a replacement fan - both 2nd hand on ebay (I wasn't sure whether the "new" parts on ebay were genuine, having been burnt by "compatible" macbook batteries before).

Before I reverse all 46 tricky steps, I'd like to test it in a disassembled state. Perhaps I also need an inverter cable (backlight unreliable), or perhaps the replacement inverter board is also no good.

I've tried reconnecting all cables I think prudent (missing out only the dvd+battery). And I've tried screwing a couple of the hinge screws back in in case there's an earth connection needed here.

But in both cases I get a blank screen after the startup sound. And I'm pretty sure there's no data coming through - I can't see a faint image on-screen like I could when it was disassembled.

Perhaps it thinks the display is closed. But I can't see any contact switches.

Do I really need to reassemble everything, or is there something likely wrong?

No there's no problem to run the LCD screen just linked by the cables, just be sure that all the cables are adequately connected. You should get a faint image onscreen coming from the LVDS cable to screen so check connections to both ends of the cable. Same thing for the backlight system.

Thanks lemerise. I didn't disassemble the display other than the plastic bezel and inverter housing, so I'm assuming the other end of the cable is still well connected. The logic board end is firmly in. No prodding of cables while running brings any faint image in.

Perhaps my careful disassembly has broken the cable. Logic board seems to be ok, as I'm getting vga out ok.

Inverter also not working; is it expected for an inverter still to light up a blank screen when inverter working but lvds cable not?

Before I started, I had a backlight that wouldn't come on until I moved the screen to a certain position, but after a minute it was 100% reliable (so I wasn't sure if it was the inverter or the cable). Everything else was fine. Now I have neither backlight nor image.

Update - the data cable is now working. I unplugged and plugged it back it several times, the last time untwisting the hinge cable, and now I get the dark image. Perhaps there was some dust in the cable socket, or the cable is damaged.

However the inverter is still not working - neither of them. Should this work when running with cables connected and disassembled? From what I gather there's not much to be done diagnostics-wise other than try replacing the inverter cable too.

It was the inverter cable. A quick test with the multimeter showed one of the 4 lines was broken. Thanks for the advice.

Inverter board is rarely faulty. The inverter cable is very fragile and can be damaged where it pass in the display hinge so if you loose backlight when changing the display angle then most of the time the inverter cable is the culprit. Thanks for accepting my answer :-)
