I have an iphone 4. recently it stop receiving call, then I tried updating the phone it seems to go all the way to the end but start getting this -1 error and cannot go further....

Error -1 is most often an error of the baseband chip. It fails at initialization during the Restore process. It is a fatal error, meaning no fix. That said, try all sorts of Restore attempts of your iPhone to get past this step. Try different computers, try custom firmwares, try jailbreak tools. Nothing will work, but try anyway.
