Best SSD Upgrade and After Mounting Bracket

Hello,

I REALLY want to replace the HDD on my late 2009 iMac with a 120GB SSD. Which are the 2-preferred manufacturers for this model and is their an after market bracket...latter do not want to use velcro to keep SSD secure, but want to be able to use the original drive mounting holes. I will use a NAS to handle the extra stored data.

Also, I'm aware of the temperature sensor interface...I've read blogs to either short out the pins, use a prompt command to reconfig or use a fan control software. Any recommendations?

Thnx,

Wil

Hello Wilmor,

You are right in replacing you HDD with a SSD, it will give your iMac a new life! I'm personaly using a samsung 840 pro on my 13" mbp 2012.

I don't know about a braket in order to hold your 2,5" SSD in place of your 3,5" mechanical hard drive. What I would recommend is to keep the actual HDD in its position for the data storage and use the optical drive bay for the SSD. Doing that, you skip the problem with the thermal sensor 2,5/3,5" braket. Optical drive will need to be removed but it is not too used these days, don't you think?

Check out this iMac & Mac mini Dual Drive Enclosure for that purpose.

You can install your system on the SSD, data on the HDD. You can keep your optical drive in a drawer and eventually buy an external adapter in case you need to use it one day.

For the SSD to buy, you should read this already replied Which SSD should I use to replace my HDD?

Make sure to take into consideration all these AHCI, TRIM stuff. You need the TRIM to be active in order to keep respectable performances with your SSD. Please ask if you need more info on that, there is probably some one that can help. You can refer to this article on How to Enable TRIM on Your Mac's Solid-State Drive

Thanks Gaetan,

I will look into your suggestions.

The reason why I want to keep my optical drive is to keep the hardware in original form...only replacing the HDD w/ SSD, improving boot-up time. I'm actually selling my iMac to a friend of mine who has tons of CD's and DVD's that he needs to rip...apparently he's been living in the dark ages the past decade!

I have my iMac open, and it seems the HDD bracket could be re-designed...key is taking advantage of the mounting holes. It's been a while since I've done any Auto CAD work...but possible.

As for temp sensor, this is probably a simple a logic-level ambient temp IC on the circuit board of the Hitachi drive. I will do some investigation...

There are adapter blocks to use as a filler for 2.5" SSD drives. Or, better yet get a 3.5" SSD to start with.

If your friend is Ripping his CD's down to MP3s he really needs a HD not a SSD in the system. Yes the boot up will be quicker with the SSD, but the work space to hold the MP3's won't be enough.

I'm pretty sure it would be pretty easy to make your own bracket but indeed, there is adapters ready to use sold on the web. Here is an example Akasa AK-MX010 but there is probably a lot others.

However I still maintain that having regular HD for the data is important specifically for a desktop computer! Keep in mind that replacing your optical drive with a SSD does not means no optical drive. You can still use the same optical drive as an external drive with an adaptor. Your friend would still be able to rip his CD.

Gaetan,

That SSD bracket, and most wont work at all, the Power and SATA cables are way too short in the iMac to reach to the center of the bracket, the drive has to be mounted on the correct side edge of the bracket.

also i replace hard drives in iMacs all the time and make a thermal sensor when needed.

also, don't rip CDs as mp3... rip as lossless...

Hello, please note the enclosure is sold for iMac and no longer cable are required. The enclosure is connectors are at the exact same place as the optical drive and will connect with no issues. The SSD is not connected to the iMac cable directly.

I think the confusion here is the difference of a dual drive config Vs a HD to SSD swap out. In the latter, you need a 2.5" to 3.5" adapter frame to make up the difference between the different sizes of. The drives. The dual drive adapter is not suited for the task.
