Will Apple Honor NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT failure to non-original owner

Hello all,

I have a Sept 2007 MacBook Pro 15 2.4 that falls into the catagory of the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT high failure rate.

My MacBook's video just died "Black Screen" but it still boots, and chimes but no vidoe and it won't display video to an external monitor either.

My question is will Apple honor the following statement if you are not the original owner of the MacBook?

"In July 2008, NVIDIA publicly acknowledged a higher than normal failure rate for some of their graphics processors due to a packaging defect. At that same time, NVIDIA assured Apple that Mac computers with these graphics processors were not affected. However, after an Apple-led investigation, Apple has determined that some MacBook Pro computers with the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics processor may be affected. If the NVIDIA graphics processor in your MacBook Pro has failed, or fails within three years of the original date of purchase, a repair will be done free of charge, even if your MacBook Pro is out of warranty."

yes they are replacing even you are not the original owner. i had replaced it already

Apple should show some class and do the right thing here! they extended the warranty for 4 years, but to me, thats like saying they only put a 4 year life span on their products!!! Were talking about a defective component here! the chip will fail!! Apple was negligent! end of story!! and the test that they do to see if the NVIDIA 8600 is the true cause, is a joke!!! Im a Mac user!! always was! and will always be! but Im really disappointed with Apple's actions here!! I'll never buy a new Mac again! thanks to Apple warning me about their negligent tendencies!!

Just a follow up on this. Apple did honor their extended warranty, they just ran a test and found that the Nvidia Video Chip was faulty and was told I'll get a new Logic Board free of charge.

I believe they will if you have the original purchase documents. If you don't I would ask anyway. the worst that can happen is a denial of repair. Ralph

I'll give it a try, I just had my other MacBook (17") do the same thing!!! No video!!! Both are 2007 models and both produced in July.

Apple's warranties in general are based upon age of the product and not who purchased it. If you can establish original ownership this should help solidify their obligation to you.

I think that they don't bother who is the MBP owner but the machine serial number must match the database of the units that were released with the bad Nvidia GPUs.

Well, I had once an used Macbook sent into repair. I just explained the situation to the Apple Phone Support number, told the name of the earlier owner, gave them the Serial Number of the device and asked to remove the registration to the past AppleID. Then I registered the used device to my own AppleID, and I was able to access every service.

As for Edwin Torres's case, they told me that for the Macbook discoloration issue (it happened me just once) they would change the discolored/cracked palmrest every time it happened until my device went into vintage (eventually, in time it did).

I believe the same thing applies to every other repair. However, you could try opening a new question of your own, to gather more support and let people search about similar issues with more ease.

The extended repair program is for 4 years from original date of purchase. My MBPro was bought in June 07- more than 4 years ago. The genius bar diagnosed it as failed NVIDIA but refused to replace it under the program because it's more than 4 years. What BS...what difference does it make how long it's been, if it hasn't been replaced and it's in the list of affected MBPros it's still in the list of affected machines. I would have brought it in a long time ago, or even when they had the class-action suit but because it wasn't exhibiting symptoms then they wouldn't do anything. Now I'm out a laptop which is in excellent condition.

I'm in the same boat as you ravex1049. My GPU died a couple months back, exactly two months after the 4 year warranty period.

Hopefully the lawsuit filed by Seattle Rex will shed some much needed attention to this issue and prompt Apple to reimburse those who are affected.

My 2008 MBPro started having kernal panics because of the NVIDIA problem as well. I missed the 4 year free replacement window by 30 days. Of course, had Apple contacted me about the issue 4 years ago, I would have paid closer attention to the occassional video flashes. The kernal panics got worse and worse until the machine wouldn't get beyond the grey screen. I spent the last 30 days reinstalling the operating system... I should have brought it in right away instead of trying to follow the online help. Now I have to pay $310 to get it fixed. I wonder if there is still recourse. Class action perhaps? At the office I've been using an IBM Lenovo laptop for 6 years for about 50+ hours per week -- never had any issues with it. My MBPro, which I use at home, is 4 years old -- I use it significantly less than my office machine (about 10 hours a week). I like Mac better than PCs, but I'm very dissappointed with Apple on this issue given the cost of a MBPro.

FYI - Apple just lost a lawsuit from an MacBook Pro owner (Seattle Rex) who was denied a replacement logic bd because it was out of the extended warranty period.

I'm sure if you go back to the 'Apple Store' in the next week or so you'll find a very different attitude by the support folks. Once Apple sends out the word not to object to anyone bringing in a system which has the defective Nvidia GPU. I doubt they will argue If they are the original owner or not as well.

If you do find they are still denying you service remind them they just lost a lawsuit on this matter and you will file suit, point them to this and watch them change their tune:

Your reference is lacking court case numbers etc... AKA the things that distinguish fairy tails from what people can actually use.

Agreed. I once got chewed up for having asked court case numbers to someone speaking about a lawsuit, but until a case is settled in court, even the most heated extrajudicial, "Julia Robert's Erin Brokovitch" sounding protest by customers it's only wishful thinking.

By then, Apple, as did with the Nano 1g and the Macbook Bottom Case, will have already issued a major recall order and/or an extended warranty.

I know I'll hate being chewed up for the second time in two different situations, but:

1. Your second link acts mostly as the equivalent in my country: it tells met that, by that case number, there was a case in King County with Apple as a defendant. To see the court records themselves, I'd have to get there

2. According to Seattle Rex's blog, the case involved extending the 4 years extended warranty to Macbook Pro upclocked by Apple itself.

There's not a single line telling me that in Case 125-00818 Apple agreed to extend the 4-years warranty to 6, eight or an indefinite amount of time.

Just that, currently, the 4 years warranty since the day of purchase has to be upheld with every single CPU configuration, as soon as the GPU is the NVIDIA GeForce.

That's an important ruling, but not the one we were speaking of...

I would definitely try it. Even though you're not the original owner, I would hope that Apple would honor your claim.

I've tried to get Apple to change mine but unfortunately after bringing it to an authorized support, they have told me that NVIDIA covers just until the 4th year, while my macbook pro was bought in April 2007.

I've found it on eBay, but it says compatible with some Dell... anyone knows where can I findo one to buy?

Well, I'm an original owner and Apple didn't honor the recall for NVIDEA, even when the Authorized Service Provider diagnosis NVIDEA problems... I'm reaaaaally not happy w apple so far. A US 2k machine should last more than 3 years, that doesn't seem like apple at all

Knowing Apple they probably will not honor it. YOu could give it a try. I have taken in may Macs I got off eBay, and they have never asked me if I am the original owner or anything. As long as the serial doesn't come up stolen you will be good :)

My failed again after they repaired a first time anyone know if they'll fix it again free of charge? I think it's been about 4 months since they did the original repair.

Does anyone know when the cut off date off date regarding the faulty NIVIDA recall. I'm dealing with the black screen of death after lion install. I purchased my Macbook Pro Jan 2008.

I can i find out if my MacBook Pro is affected? It was given to me by my office. A user complained of the screen going out intermittenly, I figured I could take it and use it for all it's worth, but if it's just the graphics card, and Apple would replace it for free, that would be awesome.
