Boots from external usb drive only

OK so I was just handed a 07 MBP that has a circle with a line through it at startup.

I've tested the hdd and it fires up just fine in another unit.

Leave the drive out of the 07 and I get the folder with question mark.

Tested ram and checks out fine.

Leave ram out of 07 and I get the flashes.

Chime did work but now there isn't one.

Use an external drive via usb and it starts up though still no chime.

Try with a firewire drive and back to circle with line.

Power up under option and all internal and external devices are seen, choose anything other than usb and right back to circle with line.

Any ides?

Screen/video works fine BTW

What OS or OS's are you trying to use here? OS-X or MS Windows and can you tell us what version/s. Also can you give us the last four digits of your serial number so we can correctly identify which model you have.

With the USB drive booting (OS-X) see if you can get Disk Utility to check out your internal drive. It may need repairing.

Update

Lets first try resetting things: Here's a good Apple TN on resetting the NVRAM & PRAM About NVRAM & PRAM after you reset the NVRAM you will need to go to your system preferences and select the disk/boot volume from the Startup Disk control panel.

Hopefully that solves things here. If not you may need to remove the current partition and reformat the internal drive.

Update

Have you tried running the Apple Hardware Test (AHT) from the CD?

Have you tried a new HD cable assembly as well as inspect the HD connector as well as the logic board connectors for any damage?

Can you give us the make and model of the HD you're using here.

DX6C.

OS is Snow Leopard only.

Have run disk utility already, didn't find a problem.

I can run the computer all day long with external drive without a problem except for no audio device found.

Already did that with no change.

Hard drive functions fine in a different unit.

Used test drive with same results.

Firewire drive is seen under option but comes up with same circle with line.

Only way to get it to start and function is via usb drive (doesn't matter which drive I have in the usb, they all boot up) and then it acts like nothing is wrong other than no sound device found.

No liquid spill, fans are fairly clean (less then 20% blockage), thermal paste was changed two years ago.

Gee, you'er no fun ;-{ So it sounds like you've done all of the easy answers.

So I have the audio working again but no idea why, came on after I looked over the LB to see if anything was out of place (all good).

I rebooted the machine from the external drive, accessed the onboard hard drive and even played a game that is on it so that function is ok.

I then did the same with the firewire drive, played a few tunes I have stored on it and everything works great.

Did find the right hand usb isn't functioning but both on left are.

The fans have come on high as usual after resetting the systems.

Still comes up with circle with line if I try to boot from anything other than usb drive though I do not have a disk to try and load from.

Tried three drives, Hitachi, Toshiba and Fujitsu, all work fine in other systems.

Have not tried another cable as this one works once the unit is up and running.

Swapped the HD cable with another machine and she is up and running, but then so is the other one so I have no idea why it won't work in the original one (tried installing it again and problem came back) but here I am typing away with it.

Go figure.
