Which one to repair (battery or power source or logic board)?

Having a 15" MBP i5/2.4GHz system for 3 years. Last night I disconnected the power source and carried the laptop 5 feet while it is running to connect to HDTV using the mini display output. As soon as I put the laptop on the floor (carpeted), it started making a huge noise and noticed the OS X is started doing the indexing. Since this is common as whenever OS X does the indexing it utilizes the whole CPU and memory, it makes that noise. I knew it. So left it a while. 5 minutes later connected the power source as trying to watch the movie from laptop to TV. The noise continues and I don't see the battery information in the menu bar or even in the settings. It says the current battery charge level is 0%. When connected the power source, the green light is very dim (vs very bright in normal case and switches to orange/red color while charging) and doesn't change color to orange/red indicating that it is charging. When pressed the little soft button on the left side of the laptop which shows the battery level, doesn't show anything at all. Restarted the machine few times and still no luck. Next day morning tried the Hardware test as mentioned by Apple (holding down the D key while system is starting), but nothing came out of it. The system started normally, didn't even get the hardware test screen. The noise still continues and this morning I don't see even the dim light (green) when the power source is connected. The system starts and runs normally but makes noise. Even if I disconnect the power source, the system is still ON. But battery charge is 0% as per the OS X settings. How is this possible? Initially I thought the battery is gone. But seems like something else now. Please suggest me what to do here before even going to any repair facility. I really appreciate the experts help in this matter. Let me know if you require any additional information.

Please let me know which one to replace based on what I explained above.?

Shut down the computer.

Perfect. This really worked for me. Now the noise is gone. I can see the battery charge and icon back in menu bar. Also the LED on magsafe changing the colors. You really saved my life before spending $$$$ for this. Thank You.

Sounds like HD failure - (the "indexing sound) backup everything important ASAP.

Laptops are not really meant to be moved while running unless they have SSD's in place of standard platter HDs. Laptops were/are "portable" in the sense that they were compact and light enough to be moved from location to location.

To find the battery state use either System Profiler app or System Information app (which depends on the version of X you have) look on the left under power, this will show the battery state (good or bad) and it's number of life cycles… High number of cycles (over 300) indicate end of life and time for replacement (If a battery is defective or abused this can happen with low cycle count but a high cycle count is a fair indicator of battery life).

If this is the original battery it would not be unusual that it needs replacement.

Hi machead3, thanks for your tip.

I have Crucial SSD installed not the apple supplied HD. Even now the systems powers up and can run all applications but not able to see the battery charge or power source connected activity. let me know what else I can look
