Erratic touchscreen after iOS 7.04 upgrade on iPhone 5

I had no problems with the touchscreen prior to upgrading to iOS 7.0.4 in December.

The next day I started having problems with the touchscreen.

At first it only acted erratic when my finger got near the screen, even before I actually touched it. Whatever was on the screen would jitter and not respond properly to what I was trying to do.

I found that just pressing the lock button would fix it, at least for a while.

Now, locking the phone only corrects the problem some of the time.

Also, it sometimes now gets "possessed" and will open apps, zoom in & out, or even make phone calls if the phone app is open. Even if I'm not holding the phone or near it in any way.

Sometimes I can be actively using the phone for more than an hour with no problems. Sometimes it comes and goes for a while.

It has never gotten wet. It's only been dropped a couple times, but always in a protective case and not more than 2 feet off the floor.

The screen is not cracked, and I have never opened the phone. And it was not jail broken.

I have reset the phone multiple times, with and without a backup, and the problem is still there.

My phone is past the Apple 1 year warranty.

I have exactly the same problem since past 10 days. I did install update regularly, After I faced this exact problem, I installed latest update too. Did restart many times, Did factory reset, still no help. My phone is also exactly 1 yr 3 months. No warranty. iphone 5c sucks. Someone please suggest if you find a solution.

von

I see this post is about over a year old. But I have the exact same problem except when it started it started when the update was available in the settings app. I also have a glitch in my screen which hasn't gone away. If you found a solution please respond it is driving me crazy my phone is new ive never dropped or anything. I've had it for a year though. But I take very good care of it.

Try flexing your phone when it has a freak-out... I am able to launch apps just by flexing it, leading me to believe that (most of) these issues are hardware related..

My iPhone 5 had this problem over the last year or so until last night, when I dropped it from the top bunk of my bunk bed. It was a less than 1.5-metre fall that somehow fixed what I thought was a lost cause of a screen.*

Before, it was just as we described it: it would refuse to respond when being tapped (no matter how hard or how fast I tapped the screen), it would erratically tap, drag, and hold on to the screen by itself. A plus, though, is that it could create some abstract masterpieces by itself in the drawing app. But, other than that, the struggle was indeed a reality. Some of the crimes that my phone and it's notorious screen had committed include failing to launch my camera when I needed it most, not being able to press the green button when I needed to answer important calls, and liking photos for me as I scroll through my feed.

Initially, my only temporary solution for the unresponsive screen was to (again, as many have said), by locking the screen and using the home button to turn the screen on (unlocking with the lock button didn't work). My phone gradually deteriorated and that eventually stopped working as a solution. After months of use, the only solution was to lock the screen and then give it a few solid knocks on its back, just above the Apple logo. This, however, provided relief that sometimes did not last me even to the second digit of my passcode lock.

Now, I'm in complete bliss being able to type this much without having to constantly lock and bang on my phone. There may be a few scuff marks on the corner of my phone, but they are more than worth it.

For those of you desperate enough to try and recreate how my phone was fixed, note that my iPhone is up-to-date with the latest iOS and had no case but had a screen protector on its front and back. It was face-down as I (accidentally) knocked it over the side of the bed. It landed on hardwood flooring and I found it face-down. Good luck.

I'm so glad I read this. I had dropped mine two days ago and it started going nuts on the charger. After reading your post I dropped mine about 2 feet up ( I did it twice for good measure. Lol). It is now working fine. I too have a protective screen and case

von

sounds like a good old way of dealing with electric devices - russian style as we say :) I might try it soon too, as I have the same problem

will, don't discount malware. yes, iPhones get malware too. a quick scan with malwarebytes for iphone is a lot quicker than jumping straight into hardware issues. and as hylke said, after removing a couple of apps, "working fine"/

I have the exact same problem. The 5s was running 7.1 so I reset everything and started from scratch with iOS 8.1 (no backup restore) but it made no difference. I just replaced the digitizer & screen and STILL have the same problem! Does anybody know how to fix this???

I have the same problem with screen zooming and clicking on apps without me touching it. I also can't scroll, if I lock it by clicking power button and then unlock it usually works about 10 seconds then starts glitching again. I have erased everything on phone and had a new screen with LCD installed and the problem is still there. I can't pay $300 for a new one. How do I fix it??? It has ios 8.0.3(newest ios). thx

It sounds to me like, coincidentally, your digitizer may have chosen to go bad right after your upgrade to 7.0.4. One thing to try, however, would be to make a backup of the device in iTunes, sign out of Find iPhone, put the phone into DFU Restore, and then connect it to iTunes and let it reset everything on the device. Once that's complete, restore the phone from the backup that you made. You need to be thorough and be certain that you have all of your music and apps synced with iTunes before you put it in DFU...

Hi,

I'm having the same problem as described above, however it seems to be specifically located around the bottom quarter of my screen. It's the apps in the bottom apps bar that keep randomly opening and it's the bottom two lines of my keyboard that I can't type with when it's in its messing about mode.

I have quite a few app updates that I haven't done in a while, could updating these help?

I also haven't updated to iOS 7.1.2 yet, could updating the operating system help, or is there a risk of breaking my phone completely by trying to update whilst the phone is in such a temperamental mood?

Any help greatly appreciated! :)

I have an Otter Box iPhone case, and I recently had that spazz-out touch screen experience. I took the case off, and there was absolutely no problem with the screen. I put the case back on very carefully, and it works fine.

I had the exact same problem. I went to the AT&T store who told me I need to take it to the Apple Store. They also said that since my phone was more than a year old, I couldn't get a replacement, otherwise Apple would replace it for free. They also said the problem may have something to do with the screen. That's when I suddenly realized I had the screen and the LCD replaced a couple months ago, since my phone fell and the screen broke. So I called the guy who had replaced it, he came over, changed the screen and voila! It worked!

Try replacing the screen. that might work. Good luck!

I have had the same problem...screen is just mad typing things itself; opening apps for no reason. Screen replacement at £100+ by apple. Phone is about 15 months old having replaced an iPhone 4s that was about the same age with a broken wifi antenna. So 2 iPhones cost hundreds of ££ neither of which lasted 18 months before needing major repairs!

My iphone 5 screen went mad and was typing as my finger approached the screen. When i touched the screen on a game it would zoom across to the edge. It got progressively worse so I bought a new screen digitizer from Amazon. I got the screen off easily enough and then got cold feet and replaced the screen. Since then the screen has been working ok (touch wood). No saying this is the answer but seems to have worked for me even if I have possibly wasted £22 on a screen

I started having an issue about a week ago and it is slowly getting worse. I try to open an the messenger app and the weather app located under and over one opens up. I close it and it opens again by itself. I also my phone started selecting random things when my finger is just hovering over it. I got a refurbished phone from Apple about a month ago.

Mine is still typing whatever it wants. Happened after I switched otter boxes. The first one I had on it since the day it was bought, it had the semi-thick piece of plastic connected to the case to protect the screen. This new case does not. That could be my problem. It also does some weird stuff if it's to windy. It is impossible for me to type in front of a fan. It'll go all satanic on me and type whatever letters it wants lol, so idk if it's the heat that causes these issues. I doubt it. I just turn mine off and back on. I'm talking to an apple tech tonight. I can't afford a new phone. This just sucks because I really like Apple products, but I might go windows next time :/ :(

I also did the latest ios update. The same night I thought I was loosing my f-----g mind when my screen started zooming and changing colors when I flipped it over or shook it a bit. Finally I called version and they replaced the phone. I honestly think someone hacked the program with a fake certificate, then rewrote the code to the program and made it act malicious. A lot was changed after, phone number, location, emails, ect. .... Just call your telephone company and ask for replacement. Good luck ;)

If you look at your phone closely, you might see that it has been slightly bent. I bent mine trying to take it out of a waterproof case, and the screen went crazy. I could manipulate the touchscreen just by flexing the phone slightly.

I haven't tried this, but maybe the phone needs to be "straightened" before the screen is fixed?

If it is bent, that is.

Yo people, I got a similar problem, with a few charming and bizarre variations.

So the issue is like you all describe. It's erratic, types random $@$*, and a lot of the time doesn't allow me to interact with the phone properly. But it comes and goes - it's not as bad for me as for others in this thread.

I thought it started cause I charged my phone in the USA (I'm from Australia) because it begun the first morning I left my phone plugged in. But that can't be it - a mate has charged his phone from the same charger/adaptor and his is fine. Also, having read up on the iphone power adaptor, it can't be that I've &&^&@@ up the battery with too much voltage.

That said, the phone was pretty hot... that was weird.

Anyway, the first day this happened I took the phone to a phone doctor. Annoyingly the phone was acting almost normally by the time I got there, except that the bottom centimetre or so of the screen didn't work. So the dude replaced the screen. Buh-bye $100.

There was a definite improvement with that, and the bottom of the screen has "worked" since then. But the phone still goes crazy. And the weird thing is, it does it much more in the morning! Like, when I wake up its barely useable. Gets better but still frustrating over breakfast, and by lunchtime it's more or less normal.

Its bloody weird. The other thing I've noticed is a very fain pattern of long grey rectangles on the screen. Like, everything is visible just fine, but there are these faint closely spaced rectangles/lines in the background.

I've done a soft reset and a hard reset, neither did $@$* for me. I can't delete any exta apps cause I don't have many installed, and I use everything I've got. I mean, the phone is *mostly* functional, so I dunno. But it's &&^&^$^ annoying.

Guys,

I know of 10 people in my office who has the same problem including myself. We realized that it happens as soon as the warranty gets over, and the first software upgrade after that.

It is a ploy by apple to make people go and exchange there phone by paying money.

I am very disappointing and never to buy apple again.

Unbelievable, but my problem is gone with a simple fix! I was suspecting it was something mechanical - the screen was acting erratic, as long as the phone was lying flat. As soon as I touch it with the second hand, or take it up into my hand, the strange behavior was gone (most of the times). But now I have bought a simple plastic protection case, and all the weird behavior is gone completely! I have no idea what happened - maybe it has something to do with grounding, but I finally can use my iPhone again.
