MacBook Pro broken, maybe harddisk trouble?

Here's what happened:

Hit MBP started making sound, now it's very slow

Decided to make a new thread, with a follow up to the problem.

I bought a new hard drive cable and inserted it in the MBP, but it didn't work. So if it isn't the hard drive cable it must be the hard drive, right?

And is there any way I can test if it is the hard drive that is broken? I have bought a new MBP in the meantime and have made a Time Machine backup of the new MBP. I think I read somewhere I could boot the old MBP using the new MBP's Time Machine backup and thus test if it is the hard drive, but I'm nowhere sure about this.

Thanks in advance!

Use Target Mode to connect the two machines. Start the bad machine up holding down the "T" key. Run Disk Utilities on it from the good one. Here's how to do it: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1661

Thanks for the answer. Sadly I don't have a FireWire cable. Is there a way I can do this or some other thing without having to invest in the cable?

A more expensive way would be to get an external hard drive and using the other mac system prep it up so its bootable, then plug it into your system and reboot it under this external drive so you can do diagnostics on your systems HD. Basically, Machead's solution is the cheapest and least amount of work.

A firewire cable can be had for about $4.00 on ebay.

I have already booted from a Lion disk (the system on there is Mountain Lion though) and I ran Disk Utilities, which said everything was fine. Don't know if it can give another result using a Firewire Cable?

Mattias - To be clear here you created a Lion bootable DVD disk off another system and then booted up your system from it - Is that correct?
