"Ghost touching after digitizer replacement"

I replaced the digitizer of a white iPad 4 wifi and after a while of use the iPad started registering random touches, typing random words and stuff like that. i thought it was the digitizer so i got a second one and its doing the same thing. Does anyone have any suggestions? The digitizer flex cable seems to be tightly in.

Thanks

It sounds like you might have a hardware or a software issue, try to open up the device and make sure all cables are on correctly by removing and reinserting. If that doesn't work you may have to do a restore or a factory reset. Let me know if these options don't work.

If the digitizers are good, at first, check the cables are connected well as Gary said. And by the way, check the connectors on board especially the pins to see if they are damaged when you replace.

If reboot or factory reset also makes no effort, you should check your mother board.

What fixed it for me was several things: 1. Super clean the digitizer contacts and seat them firmly. 2. Flatten the frame to within a 1/16th of an inch.

The first two digitizers were jittery. I returned the first one but since they are so cheap I just bought a third one which I used in the final repair. So there is a small chance that the first two were defective or I didn't seat them good enough (but I doubt it.) I also might have over-heated one of them in my attempt to seat it on the warped frame. But the final digitizer is working great and so I am betting on the warped frame being the culprit.

Here is a video of my process:

The above repair was successful but then I cracked one of the corners. I ordered a replacement and was shocked when the ghost returned! This time I tried taping the edges (fail) and then I removed it, super cleaned the ribbon connector and slot with electronic contact cleaner. Success! This time it was a ribbon connector issue.

I'll try that next on mine, just need to pick up some contact cleaner.

I had an ebay ipad4 wifi exhibiting extensive ghost/phantom touches, so bad you can’t log in, magnifier feature was the most common activated, but general mayhem.

I also assumed digitizer, but my first replacement (ifixit digitizer) showed the exact same issues. Bodydid not appear warped, no bent corners etc. My only clue was I could sometimes get it to behave before pressing the digitizer down onto the adhesive. I went in circles for a while, tried everything suggested everywhere. Kapton tape over areas of the digitizer frame, reseating and cleaning contacts, checking cable management for possible grounding. Nothing was working!

Then, I tried working my way around with the ipad awake while I attempted to seal the digitizer… the phantom touches appeared on the left side as I pressed down, not near the digitizer ribbon cable, more in the center. Curious!

One of the things I tried previously was to tighten any screws in the chassis I could find. However I neglected the small pairs of screws (PH000) that run down the left side in the aluminum frame that surrounds the display. A few of these accepted another turn or two (with some force).

As I resealed the last time the ghost touch was gone! Of course my seal sucks now due to the adhesive getting mangled multiple times in successive attempts, and it’s only been a few hours, so don’t know if they will return.

My suspicion is there is a very very small tolerance for any bend in this part of the internal framing that causes it to approach the digitizer more than it should? That is my best guess, but it seems to have solved it for me. I don’t think this will be the solution for everyone, as there seem to be multiple vectors for getting ghost touches as a problem.

Woe is me, this fix appeared not to stick. After a full charge cycle and letting it sit for a few days not using it, the ghost-touches have come back.

Back to the drawing board unless it's just my damaged adhesive strips that are causing the fix to be non-permanent.
