Check any kb article like this one , a few quick google searches can provide many forum results discussing in great detail the performance lags you can get.

I just read here the importance of the balanced RAM, whereas Apple recommends ... not a strong statement, they would say s.th. like must.
I fear the only people who could really answer this are bound by NDA's
