RAM issue: MacBook freezes and beeps three times

My Macbook Pro have started freezing and beeping three times. This only happens occasionally and when it does the problem continues after a reboot unless I force close and let the computer stay turned off for a while. When it starts up again it works for approx the same time it was shut down.

It's weird. If it shut down for an hour it will work for an hour before it freezes and starts beeping.

I know that three beeps indicates a RAM issue and I've looked at all different post about similar issues on web, but not found a solution.

I've tried taking out on of the ram clips, which actually seem to work.

This would then indicate that either one of the clips are broken or one of the slots. However, the weird thing is that both slots seem to work with both clips, but not at the same time.

I know that I could obviously just go on using only one stick in one of the slots, but if all elements seem to be working separately I would of course rather get both slots and sticks to work at the same time.

Is there some part of the puzzle I am not seeing?

Both RAM clips are 4 GB. I don't have the original 2GB that came with the machine to test anymore.

Any ideas?

I'm guessing by RAM clips, you meant RAM sticks. The clip is the part on the motherboard that holds it in.

I have the same problem, but still no luck on finding a solution. I started having this freezes like a month ago, I had 2x4GB crucial RAM sticks. Read online that it may be a RAM problem so I switched back in the old 2x2GB apple RAM, but I still get the freezes and the beeps.

There are times that the mac simply refuses to boot. When this happen I boot from the windows bootcamp partition and everything goes fine.

Heat issue? maybe. After I cleaned the dusty fan the computer lasts longer.

Had the same problem....just as it was about to fail , I rapped on the back of the Mac and the problem quit.....Something is physically loose inside if that changed things.

Sharing what finally worked for me in case this helps someone.

One of the RAM slots was faulty and caused one of the modules to disconnect randomly. I ended up removing the RAM from the faulty slot and using just one slot. The max memory my computer can take per slot is 8gb, so I got one 8gb memory and it has been working fine ever since.

Sounds like a heat issue given the fact the system does start up cold.

One of the things I would do here is install a good fan & temp sensor monitor like Temperature Gauge. Lets see what it tells us.

If your system is not stable enough to install the software you could try this: Put your system into a tight plastic bag (squeeze out as much air as you can) and place the system in your refrigerator for a few hours (not too long now). Does the system stay running longer? If it does see if you can install the monitoring software while the free version will give you some info the full version writes the info to a file so you can review it just when the system crashes.

Make sure to wear mittens for those refrigerated keys!

Dan, three beeps. RAM issue. Reseat and/or replace RAM, possible bad slot.

I agree thats what I would start with here. Given his diagnostics I thought he might have a heat issue (he appears to have tested the RAM issue out). I've seen a few system behave like this when the fan had failed. Which is why I wanted to gain more info on the temp & fans. If that was OK then its the slot is bad.

Mayer note the date here 2014 (old post)

It is most definitely the RAM chips. If you get 3 beeps a pause and then the beeps repeat. The RAM is definitely defective. I suggest getting new RAM and if it is new I would return it to the vendor for a replacement. You can call them up to get an exchange arranged. IFixit is really the best place to get your parts for Mac products IMHO. I won't use anyone else because of their customer support. I get outstanding service every time. Being a Technician, I replace parts often. I just had this issue on my own laptop for RAM I bought from them 2 years ago. I just bought a replacement just now when I saw this and had to let you know what the issue is and how to fix it.

I found that the issue is actually related to the logic board in my case. Replaced it and everything was golden again.

As this question is a year old and was not really resolved, you might do better to start a new question and give us YOUR exact symptoms.

Actually I found a solution! Turns out the screws holding the RAM slots were too tight and that causes problems in the contacts. I just untightened the screws and everything back to normal. Hope this helps

Interesting. I have 2 13" MBPs in for service right now that are both having RAM issues out of the blue. I'm going to try playing with the tension of the screws to see if it makes a difference. How you came to even try loosening screws as a fix for an issue is beyond me.

von

Several years later, I'm looking at this comment stream and wondering if I need to loosen screws on my ram clips. My computer freezes and does the beeping if I pick it up by the corner. Going to try this after work today and hope for the best.
