iMac running very slow even under light RAM and CPU load

A little back ground: I purchased this imac used. When I first powered it up the cpu fan was running at full speed and it had a firmware password. I was able to get passed the firmware password after a RAM upgrade to 4GB. I repartitioned, reformatted the 160GB HD, and installed OSX 10.6.8. I've also reset the SMC, NVRAM, ran virus scan, and repaired disk permissions and the imac is still crawling! I was able to repair the LCD sensor cable which fixed the high speed fan which I was told by a "Genius" would correct the slow speed but here I am.

FYI:

37 GB of 160 GB used

CPU 90+% idel

2GB of 4GB used

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

1.

I previous upgraded to Maverick but a "Genius" told me that this computer would run slower with that OS so I reinstalled 10.6.8.

2.

I've been working on trying to run the disk defrag with iDefrag and I finally got it finish the process but computer is still crawling.

3.

I ran a test on HD and it has one bad sector with a report stating that the HD was failing. So I guess it time to get a new HD

Questions:

Would one bad sector cause the computer to crawl?

Is SanDisk SDSSDP-128G-G25 2.5" 128GB SATA III internal SSD compatible with OSX?

I suggest you update OS X to Mavericks. Check here iMac http://www.apple.com/osx/how-to-upgrade/. Since this is used Mac OS X, it might be that the hard disk drive is fragmented and causing OS X to crawl. Now, Mac handles fragmentation smartly but if the drive was used for large software then it may become fragmented. (Apple says, large/heavy software such as video editing may cause drive fragmentation). Again it is a speculation so better you check it with a software. Since, DU won't let you do that, you might go for Stellar Drive Defrag, Prosoft or iDefrag to check if the drive is badly fragmented. All these tools are paid but free version will let you know if drive fragments are many in numbers. Hope this helps!!

I like Drive Genus as it offers other useful tools. We often need to defrag the drives when working with large CAD/video files. You do need to have a different startup disk to do the job we have Firewire & Thunderbolt drives dedicated for the task.

I bet the pervious owner deleted all his stuff leaving what is now on there. As the files are fragmented the system is unable to get to the different segments of the OS & directory files very effectively. As an option one could scratch the drive and rebuild the disk if they have the recovery disk or first setup an external HD as a bootable HD with the OS files (upgrading the OS at that point). I'm sure the EFI will also need to be upgraded before upgrading given its age. Follow this Apple TN: EFI and SMC firmware updates for Intel-based Macs

I haven' tried Drive Genius but seems to be a good tool though it is $99. On the flip side Stellar Drive Defrag costs way lesser than DG. Only $39. It can show up no. of fragments on individual files & disk wise.

Upgrading to Mavericks might not help in this situation. With 4GB of RAM on this machine Mavericks would be using most of that available RAM. I would check drive health, Erase the HD with the zero out option in order to allocate bad blocks on the drive and reinstall OSX.

I downgraded from Maverick after being told by Genius that my mac would run slower on it. I went ahead and defraged with iDefrag but still crawling, the ROM is up to date, but the HD is failing.

Can I put any SSD in mac? One of the guides on ifixit says that I have to install same brand, any suggestions? I found a really inexpensive SSD 128GB by Cavalry Storage for $29. This mac only cost me $60 to the less I spend on it the better. Thanks Again.

My first thought would be a failing hard drive. Vishal may be correct about defragmenting. I use TechTool Pro to do this but there may be cheaper programs in the Apps store.

Mayer - Your do have a good point on a failing drive. I've also seen an overly loaded drive (very little free space) or not enough RAM can also be the cause. In this case the OP system looks like he have enough of both free space & RAM.

With a machine this old I would definitely replace the drive. Take a look at the new SSHD hybrid drives for a nice speed up bump. Bad sectors can be blocked out when doing a format by selecting the "write zeros" option.

Thanks Mayer. You are right! The HD is failing. So I'm looking to replace the HD but I'm concerned that one of the ifixit guides states that I have to replace with the same brand that it come with. Is this still the case?

Mayer, Thanks Again. I decided to replace HD with Cavalry Storage Pelican Series 128 GB USB/SATA II 2.5 for $30. I don't need a lot of space since this is a backup/2nd computer and will only be used for surfing online.
