Possible to replace touch ID color sensor?

Is it possible to replace the touch ID sensor color? I would love to have a white or gold iPhone 6+ with a black front. From my understanding, part of the Touch ID button is linked with a serial number to the A7 or A8 chip, so I am not sure if this would work unless I had a white button on the black face of the phone.

DON'T MESS WITH TOUCH ID SENSOR, My LCD cracked on my iPhone 6, so i bought a iCloud locked iPhone 6 on Craigslist and swapped the whole LCD home button and all, the Touch ID stopped working so i restored and phone got bricked. Turns out that each Touch ID sensor is unique to the iPhone and is linked to the serial number of that iPhone. Thankfully Apple swapped the phone under warranty.

Out iPhone 6 got errand the Touch ID stopped working. Apple replaced the Touch ID and fixed the issue. So the Touch ID sensor can be replaced. But there must be a trick to it. Apple doesn't charge much at all for the iPhone 6. Not sure about 5S.

von

@ armand the 'trick' is that apple programed a new touch id sensor to your specific iPhone. Also Neil wanted to change the color and Apple doesn't do color changes. Apple can replace the touch id home button, but do not mess with it and don't let anyone else beside Apple store mess with it.

I personally ended up doing this on accident. Bought another iPhone to increase my memory (Stupidly bought the 16gb)

I ordered a White phone to match mine, but the one that came in was black. I didn't feel like waiting to ship it back and then have Gazelle ship me a new one, so I swapped the motherboards. After this I realized the touch Id wasn't working, so I tried a factory reset. This bricked both phones. (Error 83 in iTunes I believe)

In a last ditch effort I swapped the home buttons back, restored and they worked perfectly! 4 hours of repair (and frustration) later, I accidentally have a 64gb White iPhone with a black button and 16gb Black iPhone with a white button. I'm not sure how I feel about this combination yet, but I guess if anyone steals my phone, I'll know. And it's unique.

If anyone wants pictures of how these look swapped, let me know!

No it is not possible unless you give up Touch ID altogether.

a shame.. thank you for the quick and speedy reply!

actually, swapping the logic board would work too.. wouldn't it?

von

Yeah, also buying a new phone would be a better idea.

Fred there is no way you can put the new home button on the 5s, 6 or 6 plus. Main board and home button are married. No way you can put the new guy or gal in the between :)

UPDATE: DO NOT EVER ATTEMT TO REPLACE THE HOME BUTTON.

Recent experiment indicates that for iphone 6, if the home button sensor chip is damaged or swapped, the phone will not pass through the software restore/update process. So unless you keep the original and functional Touch ID, you will have a phone that is going to brick any time.

I'm not sure that is completely accurate. I have an iphone 6 that was water damaged. We put it in a sealed bag of rice and everything is restored except the headphone jack is problematic, the lighting connector only works with apple power supply now, and the touch ID no longer works at all. I have reset the phone without any problems, but the touch ID just won't work. Maybe I missed something though. I'm still trying to figure out how bad all the damage is...

von

Maybe the Touch ID button still boots and talks to the logic board properly, but cannot scan fingerprints. Try disconnecting the Touch ID cable and reinstall iOS 8.1.2, see what happens.

UPDATE (as of April 2016): this error 53 issue was resolved by Apple pushing out a patch. As of April 2016, if the Touch ID sensor is replaced by someone other than Apple and not synced with the phone (actually the mother board of that phone) then Touch ID functionality will be lost but Home Button function will be retained and phone WILL NOT be bricked following an update or restore.

or you just need to restore the phone without the screen on. At that time, when main board try to communicate with the id sensor it will fail but they will keep the process instead of pushing up an error.

Hey Tom,

I just did my first iPhone 6 LCD replacement, and I think I also broke the vinger print function.

How do I prevent this from happening in the future ? What action is the most delicate to perform that could damage the fingerprint function ?

Could it be that this happend when i was peeling off the home button connector that is attached to the LCD shield ? ( Like you can see in step 32 iPhone 6 Plus LCD und Touchscreen tauschen )

Or witch step is the most dangeres or delicate ?

Those from step 23 to 29 ?

I would really like to know how I prevent this kind off situations in the future.

I would really appreciate it, if you would look trew these steps and could help me preventing to do any damage at all.

If there went something wrong i think it would be by performing step 32, I was really careful with it but the connector wouldn't come lose off the LCD, think I will be using my opener in the future to loosen the adhesive with some heat.

Thank you for considering to answer this.

Best regards Koen

Possible screw-ups: starting with step 11, damaged logic board connectors or adjacent components when disconnecting cables, this will be moderately difficult to repair, but it is straightforward and not fatal. Step 26-29, possible damage by folding, bending or tugging the cable too much. If it is the case, the phone is beyond repair. Step 32, possible damage by folding, bending or tugging the bridging cable too much. Cheap and easy repair.

I think I'm on step 26. Trying to remove the connection from the home button to the back plate. I tried removing it and broke the connection from the back plate off so it was still connected to the home buttons cable. I then proceeded to try and remove the said connection from the home button to save my touch ID...please give me advice

Than it would definitely be stap 32 by lifting to home button cable of the front panel. Fixable and cheap is wat i wanted to hear ;-)

Thank you very much for your time Tom !

You can change your display color on your iphone, but I would not mess around with the home button. It is linked to the board and if you update the software with a different button or a damaged one it could put your phone in error 53 and potentially brick your phone. So if you do change your screen keep the same button!

Could someone answer this question for me please. I bought a 6, the guy repaired it and didn't know what he was doing. He ripped the flex cable that goes on the lcd shield. Where the home button plugs in. It functions as a home button fine. If I purchased another lcd shield would the Touch ID work? Or at the least would the double tap to shrink the screen work?

Yes, the Touch ID functionality will be restored. I have done this personally and it is a very straight forward repair. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00XN9Z6QI/ref...

It is possible to misalign the plug on the main board when reconnecting it, yet still have it stay connected. I'd start by confirming both ends are properly aligned and fully seated. Short of that, it sounds as though one of the components, or possibly a trace, was damaged on the home button assembly itself. A closeup picture of the home button assembly could possibly provide more insight.

von

You can now restore your phone in iTunes and your phone will be good again. Apple pushed an iOS update that addresses this issue. The problem is the phone can only use an original Touch ID button but after the update, you can use an aftermarket Touch ID button and will not receive a message or brick your phone. This was an official Apple announcement. Hope it helps.
