Upgrade storage system by self

I see a Fusion upgrade option in Apple store. So I am thinking. Is it possible to only purchase the 500GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm. And then add 256GB SSD, and 2TB Hard Driver by ourselves?

Th Fusion means it can add ssd and hhd at same time. And I don't want use fusion drive after upgrade. Just use them as two different hard drives.

As far as we can tell:

If you get a HD model you don't get the needed cable to support the SSD. And if you get the SSD model you don't get the needed HD cable.

As for setting up a Fusion drive or not you can create and break apart the fusion set. So if you buy a dual driver mini you can break the fusion set. Unless you have some strong reasons it doesn't make much sense.

As for fitting a larger HD into the system, The system uses a 6.0 mm height drive Vs the older 7.5 mm drives there may not be enough room to support the larger drive.

Yes. After post this question, I also did a little research. My final target is to get more storage space in the Mac Mini. But for HHD driver, it only allows 7mm high disk. The largest is 1TB now. No more upgrade option. And also if you purchase a PCIe SSD, the price is also higher than you add it by apple. Therefore the most common way to get more storage space is to use external hard driver. It is the only choice for now.

the hdd come with the hdd only version is 7mm 500GB.but with the fusion model , it's 9.5mm 1t hdd. so don't worry about the space , it has enough space to replace with the 1t one.

see the teardown of a fusion dirve by owc, you'll fined the 9.5mm hdd.
