Not charging after using a different cable

I got an ipod nano 5th gen off a friend and it was working fine and charging fine but I tried to connect it to the computer with one of my charging cables but it didn't seem to connect so I thought it might have been the cable, and I tried another one but the replacement cable only went half way into the charging slot, now the ipod won't charge at all. I usually use a speaker to charge it that connects through the charging slot but now the device doesn't charge but the music still plays through the speaker.
