I replaced the battery, let it charge for 2 hours, unplugged showed about 50% charge and unit was completely functional. Let charge overnight, the next morning unplugged the unit and it showed a dead battery. will not charge now.

It happens that sometimes "new" batteries are "bad" right out of the box - especially the cheaper ones.
If it's an OEM battery talk to Apple, if you bought it from iFixit use the link at the bottom of the page (This is the volunteer DIY help forum we are not affiliated with iFixit in any way), if you bought it someplace else talk with your vendor.
