Sudden "No Battery Available" when previously battery seemed fine.

My battery seemed to be working fine; good, reasonably long lasting charge. Then yesterday, with the computer on, when I detached the AC adapter cord from the Macbook Pro, the computer immediately went dead off... lights out! I can reboot the laptop with the AC adapter attached, but the initial boot up screen showing the Apple logo is dark gray with the logo barely visible, and when fully booted the clock is no longer the correct time (an alert tells me to fix the clock time), and the battery icon in the uppermost top right screen bar shows an empty battery with an "X" in it. Click on the battery icon and it says "No Battery Available". The attached AC adapter light glows a solid green, as if the battery were fully charged.

My question at this point is; do I just need a new battery, or is there something else more sinister that's gone awry that has to do with not being able to access the still-good battery?

Possibilities:

1) Bad battery

2) Bad pullup resistors on battery data line, R5280, R5281.

3) U7000 pulling down battry data line.

4) Bad BIL/BIL connector pulling down battery data line.

5) Bad SMC.

Start with #1.

Or take it to Apple and tell them you have green and red lines running down the screen when you edit video and pray they replace the battery along with the board. 820-2915 boards qualify for out of warranty, free, extended repair program.

Thanks robin, but SMC reset did not help. More symptoms follow:

MacBook Pro (2011) is completely dead without power supply attached. All following symptoms occur when power supply is attached.

Computer boots up automatically (on its own) from “completely off” when power supply is attached and cover is raised; the “sleep mode” pulsing light illuminates as soon as power is attached, then stops when computer is booted.

Clock resets to December 31, 2000 at every startup. I manually reset the clock to current time & date before proceeding with anything else. “Set date and time automatically” doesn’t seem to work when checked.

Toolbar battery icon shows a black “X” inside an “empty” battery.

Clicking and holding the battery icon, in gray’d out letters it says:

No Battery Available

Power Source: Battery

Even though power supply is attached, computer follows the “Energy Saver” > "Computer Sleep" and "Display Sleep” timer

settings for “Battery” …NOT “Power Adapter”.

Hey guys,

First of all, sorry for my poor English as I am from Hong Kong.

I wish my answer can still help someone who is encountering the problem as above including myself.

I had the exactly same issue as written above. Tried all means suggested by other people (reset SMC, changed new battery blah blah blah, I even replaced the logic board) but with NO success. Lucky enough, I have another identical Macbook Pro (A1286, 15" late 2011), so I can exchange parts to see where goes wrong.

Eventually, it's the problem of Battery Indicator Lights (on the left hand side of MBP). I replaced a new one and now, my battery is BACK.

If you are not sure which part I am mentioning, it's here:

I wish this helps!

Richard, you are a genius! This fixed my daughter’s MacBook Pro (Mid 2012).

I removed the MacBook battery and could see that the battery indicator lights and switch had suffered liquid damage (coffee??). All I had to do for a quick fix was unplug the tiny ribbon connector for the switch/lights. It pops off the main logic board.

The battery’s charging now (up from 0% to 5% to 11% in the time taken to post this). MagSafe light is orange. X is gone and the battery shows a lightning symbol. The little indicator lights on the side don’t work, but I can get to those later and replace/clean the assembly.

Thanks. We were looking at either an expensive logic board swap (not worth it on a six year old laptop) or $1K for a new MacBook. This was free and fast!

First things first: reset the SMC!

You'll need to look up the proper procedure for your model:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295

Then, for good measure, run all the standard upkeep tricks:

Repair Permissions

Verify disk

Zap the PRAM

The problem I was having turned out to be I had a bad battery after all. Luckily I was told by Apple repair that I was covered by Apple's extended warranty, and my new battery replacement was free.

I had exactly the same problem and I eventually had to replace the battery after trying every diagnostic test I could think of. The battery had died, apparently quite suddenly. It was 7 years old and the original battery. My mid-2010 MacBook Pro i7 2.66 8GB has given good service and should now give another 7 years good service. I fitted the new battery myself. It is quite easy.
