most likely "dirt" or a fluid damage letting the home button stuck inside.
if you aren't able to get it done from outside - you have to open the ipod.
use the front panel guide to disassemble the ipod touch.
if you don't see anything strange between the front panel and the logic board - you have to disassemble the front panel too - but that is not a fun job - it's the only way to get to that part
