Thoughts on data recovery through logic board replacement?

My MacBook Pro 13" hard drive died. Replaced under warranty, but no backup. Yeah yeah, I know.

The dead drive belongs to Apple now. The shop that did the warranty work said they will sell me the dead drive for $199.

The hard drive doesn't spin up, doesn't try to boot and fail, in fact doesn't answer at all. Nada, zip, zilch. The repair shop found the cooling fan was broken, so the hard drive damage may have been heat related. These facts make me suspect logic board failure rather than physical failure or damage to the media. What do you think?

The disk is a Fujitsu 250GB Model MJA2250BH Type FFS G1. Online, for under $65, I can buy a new disk that appears virtually the same, Model MJA2250BH G2.

Suppose I bought back the dead drive, bought a new drive online, and swapped the logic board. Have you tried this? Given the details above, what do you think my odds of success are?

Total cost of the attempt would be about $275. If it were less than $150 I'd go ahead and try. If I were looking at a clean room recovery for many hundreds of dollars I wouldn't bother. This falls in a huge grey area and I'd appreciate your thoughts.

I had the same problem happen to me. Hard drive crashed after a vacation and pictures were lost before I performed a back up. It took a few weeks worth of research and phone calls to get a manager at my local Apple store to approve my request to keep my hard drive for future recovery. Call, or better yet, go to an Apple Store and speak to the highest level manager. Ask them to "please" accommodate your request to keep the old hard drive. They call it a "KBB Keeper" on the paperwork. They handed me my old drive for $0 cost to me. They said they often will accommodate this, but they do not offer it or advertise it.

Have them note it in their computer files for your computer's history so that the shop that did the work can get approval from Apple to release the hard drive to you.

Have a copy of the notation from Apple if you can to be sure the shop that did the work isn't trying to get an extra $199 out of you.

Please post if your logic board replacement worked or not, I may try the same thing.

Sorry, I forgot to update this post sooner. The problem turned out to be the hard drive ribbon cable. I was able to recover all of my data using a $10 SATA USB cable. The 'Genius' had insisted it was the drive, but my computer wouldn't boot up after they replaced the drive, so they took it back and found the cable to be the issue.

I think the Apple shop are a bunch of thieves. I would go straight to the owner of the shop with the information you just gave us. I realise they have to send the drive back to Apple to get paid but they could work with you. Maybe leave a deposit on it for a couple of weeks to give you a chance to recover. Your plan on a replacement board I give about a 20% chance of working. The only good thing about it is that you will have a drive to put on an external enclosure to do a Time Machine backup in the future.

I've had some good luck when swapping circuit boards on hard drives. I once had a drive with a damaged circuit board. I happened to see on Ebay an identical drive that had the click of death, so on a whim I bought it (for under $10, I believe). Swapping the circuit boards (which was really easy, given the right screwdriver) resulted in one good drive and one entirely dead drive.

You need to be sure that the circuit boards are compatible, which is best done by getting exactly the same model. Sometimes a slight model number difference doesn't matter, but sometimes it does. It's a bit of a gamble.

Over the past sixteen years, I have repaired ONE hdd by swapping the logic board. It was an identical drive and I had some reason to believe that the board was at fault. The idea is a good one if you can find an identical drive and get the dead drive cheaply.

The corporate culture does that, you should have contacted a data recovery services to get off data from a dead drive. If you still own the custody of the dead drive and which to recover your important files then do consider a data recovery services. Do not simply change your PCB, what about the ROM? This action will not help you.

Is the drive spinning, then shutting down? Or is it repeatedly clicking?

Please give a better diagnosis if you can.

BTW if the HDD is not detected by the system it will be fault not fixable DIY sorry, take it to a local DR pro for a correct analysis and recovery.
