Software ejection does not work.
The Disk help application finds the disk, but its 'eject' button is greyed out, and it displays a notice
"waiting for drive"

I also had problems with that. I'm not sure why but I found that holding down eject and esc buttons while the computer restarts will eject the disk every time.

another way, how to get the disk out is:
restart your computer, right before you hear chimes, hold down your mouse button. hold it, until it spits out the disk...
it works when you have unreadable disk in your drive and youre trying to boot up your computer. i have tried it myself, it works...

Interesting that leopard has software bugs affecting disk routines - little in life is ever perfect, is it. That's what makes things interesting.
So. I now have two methods of overcoming the problem should it ever surface again - which strongly suggests it never will.

This works when drutil tray eject doesn't work! Happened to me, rebooted whilst holding down my clicker on the trackpad, and out whined the disk.

I actually had to go in and extract it manually. But the real problem was that the bezel, the thing that lets it slide in and out, it was bent so, if you can follow the steps to get that out in the guide section, and try to see if the thing is bent, if so, just be fragile, and bend it back into place.

I used to have that problem with mine. Sometimes the eject button worked (after about the seventh try), sometimes holding the trackpad button down on restart worked...sometimes. When I got a Snow Leopard install disc in there (trying to restore an OS X with pieces missing) which utterly refused to eject under any circumstances, I googled for a solution and finally found something that worked.
It involves a sheet of card stock paper, folded in half, that will mostly cover both the top and the bottom of the disc. You *very gently* work this card into the slot, doing your best to get one half on the card to go over the disc and the other half of the card to go under the disc. As you work the card in, press the eject button to get the system to retract the spindle. You may have to do this several times. Eventually you will have the disc isolated within the fold of the card stock, isolated from the superdrive itself. When you are sure this is the case, gently pull the card stock, along with the DVD, out of the drive.
I'm glad that the reader heads on these optical drives aren't quite as delicate as the ones on hard drives.
I promptly replaced the drive, but the problem persists. This convinces me this is a system problem of some kind.

Does the optical drive show up in System Profiler?

To rabb777hp, Thanks. Yes the drive showed up, and the disk too, in 'disk utitlity', but the disk was never read.
Thanks for anyone else who tried to give advice. The problem was solved using Terminal, and entering the command
drutil tray eject.
The mystery remains why this one disk would not eject using the eject button, or more 'user-friendly' software eject routines.

Are you using leopard or snow leopard? If I remember correctly, leopard has some software bugs with ejecting and unmounting volumes and disks.

Thank you all who have been so helpful. I now have so many solutions to that problem that it's difficult to decide which to use....that is if it ever happens again - which it has not!

I have the same problem as you do. However, I have two CDs stuck inside and every time I turn on laptop it makes strange noise.
Near me there is no Apple store and no one else doesn't know how to take CDs out.
