Which part do I need?

My daughter's Kindle Fire (model D026) has a cracked screen. She did have it for almost 3 years before this happened. :( Good and bad.....my extended warranty was out. I put a screen protector on it so I didn't have to worry about glass possibly getting in her fingers. It works perfectly fine. But all of the cracks are really annoying when she's trying to read. I'm really confused about what I need to buy. Do I need a digitizer or front glass and what is the difference?

I appreciate any advice on this. I know we can get a new Fire for $99 but if I can replace the cracked screen on hers for a lot less I would much rather do that.

Sounds like you just need glass

If the touchscreen still works over the whole screen in all corners then the digitizer is ok and you just need to replace the glass. but take care to not damage the digitizer when removing the glass. there are a lot of good videos on replacing glass on youtube. The digitizer is what .makes the touch function work . there is very little difference in the look of glass and glass with digitizer except there will be cables coming off a digitizer were as glass will just be glass. Hope this helps

Do you recommend that I buy the tools that everyone talks about?

watch a few videos on the glass change to see how its goes ,do you have access to a heat gun If not you can use a hair dryer on hot but it takes longer. I use guitar picks and plastic playing cards to slide in between the glass. don't pry up or put pressure on the digitizer below the glass the whole process usually take half an hour take your time and you'll do fine
