Sadly the SSD's are very different.

Apple has used over the years many different units ones based on their own design and are now leaning to established standards both physically & logically.

Lets look at them:

While they looks the same they use different interfaces!

The M.2 connection is the same as well as the number of the PCI lanes. The interface protocols are different. The newer MacBook Pro uses NVM Express while the MacBook Air uses AHCI.

Bottom line here you can't switch them about.

According to OWC, that's not the case; their Mid 2013-2015 cards are listed as compatible with both Retinas and Airs, in both sizes. Is it possible you're thinking of the earlier 2012-2013 systems?

@adlerpe - We're both right here! First we need to look at the time point I posted this OWC didn't have a blade SSD offering yet. There SSD offers both mSATA (AHCI) as well as PCIe x2 (NVM) interfaces. While the Apple custom SSD's are not dual interfaced.
