Weird Screen Issues?

I have an original iPod video that has some weird screen issues. Sometimes, the screen shows many lines (both horizontal and vertical) that are always on top of a blank white screen. Other times, the screen is fine. Currently, the harddrive is dead, but I am planning on ordering a flash to ZIF converter thingy off eBay.

So, my main question is, am I looking at an LCD problem or a motherboard issue?

EDIT: Okay, so I turned it on (still with the dead harddrive), and I got the Apple logo, then the sad iPod logo. It kept rebooting (as the harddrive is toast), but on about the 5th reboot, the screen went white and had the aforementioned lines appear. So now I ask, could the harddrive play any part?

try checking all of the ground straps, they ground everything to the internal framework, which is grounded to the logic board for one common ground, most likely one of these isn't making contact always, so the operation may be intermittent, or, your display connector might be lose if the problem is caused by shaking the iPod

What exactly would a grounding strap look like on the iPod?

von

it's a silver metallic tab with adhesive on the back, there are a few in this ipod, one on the top of the logic board above the buttons, one on the clickwheel, it's attatched to the cable, and branches off, there might be one on the screen, but i don't remember 100% correctly if there is one or not, also there might also be one on the battery, but that connects to the backplate if it exists on yours.

Would it be this little tiny bar of shininess under the LCD?

von

Yep, that's one of them, that connects the logic board to the common ground.

It could be he logic broad were the LCD connects to it. If you are trying to fix it i would buy a new logic broad and a new hardware. I've just start to fix I pods and I have a 5th gen just like and they seem to be the easiest to fix. if you have any more question ill check tomorrow.

Check the time line on this. 4 years without any response, mighty unlikely that you will get an update. I suggest you ask your own question and give as much detail as possible. I bet you get a quicker response to your own question than waiting for an update. Use this link to ask http://www.ifixit.com/Answers/Ask/iPod+5...
