After replacing iPhone 5s screen there're vertical stripes. Now what?

After successfully replacing broken iPhone 4 and 4s screens and replacing batteries on 4, 4s and 5 without problems, I thought I was getting reasonably skilled at such tinkering. So you may imagine my disappointment after powering up a 5s after I replaced the broken screen (for the second time!) and saw that the screen's all wonky.

Before I climb back under the hood and start fiddling with connections, I'd appreciate feedback from more experienced tinkerers. Do you think it's a bad connection or is it LED issue?

I recently dropped my 5s and had lines like these show up all the way across the top and bottom, but not the middle... Is this fixable?

Lines often show up when the connectors are dirty of broken. Disconnect and inspect the clips carefully. Make sure there is no dirt or corrosion and that all the clips are present on both side of the connector. Clean them with Isopropal alcohol .

Curious to know if you've any tips on what to use when cleaning connections with alcohol. Cotton swab is what I'd usually use, but I worry the filaments may create problems. A microfiber cloth might not leave fibers behind, but such cloths don't offer much precision.

usually use a soft brissel toothbrush. Q-tips leave little pieces of cotton behind as do cloths and paper towel

Thank you. I have the same problem after I dopped my iPhone. I disaaaembled the screen, cleaned all the connections twice, and after recconnecting the porblem was still there. So there's no chance I can fix this myself?

Roman, make sure the connectors are clean and are not missing the copper pieces on the connectors (look like teeth), make sure that the connector on the screen is nice and even, may have to bend it outward just a little, pinch connector with your nail. when you place the connector to the board make sure it is on evenly and listen for a snap when pressing evenly. sometimes the connectors get pressed only from the middle and get bent causing the outer parts of the connectors not sit evenly. make sure you disconnect battery before removing and or connecting the screen back in. disconnect battery and press on the power button to discharge any power that is build up. use isopropyl alcohol and a tooth brush to clean connectors. hope this helps.

Hi there,

This is either a loose connection or damage to the LCD flex cables. Open the phone and see if they are seated correctly. Another thing you can do is with the screen connected, wiggle the screen around to see if its the flex cables around. You may need to purchase a new screen entirely.

Good Luck

Thanks so much for your response. A couple follow up questions: 1) Do you recommend wiggling, etc. with the iPhone turned on? I.e., open it with the power on? 2) How would one determine if the new screen itself is a "dud"? I.e., the notion that I'd buy a new screen to replace a new screen seems absurd. Thanks again!

Yes keep the phone on and see if the lines go away at certain angles. This will rule in or out if it is the flex cables. Did you buy the new screen online? and was it original? i say always try find a store and buy it in person and get them to test the screen in front of you to show it is 100%. There are crappy parts every where. But even with original the rare issue pops up. Just part of the game really.

I had that when I replaced a screen on an iphone 6, I took the cables of and cleaned the connections with an antistatic brush, re-connected the cable making sure they snapped into place, put phone back together and lines went out.

Is the video (uppermost) plug. I replaced my wife's screen this weekend, same result like you. Reseating the plug ( multiple tries) finally worked. Just make sure you unplug the battery while "having fun". The phone is allergic to hot plugging.

"Hot plugging"? Does that explain why the phone seems to be so unusually warm after my (apparently successful) attempts to fix the problem. Do I really need to open the darned thing up ALL OVER AGAIN?!

There are two problems. 1) The flex who conect lcd with board maybe is broken in moment when u close lcd. 2) This maybe will be a problem with lcs filters and this is a big problem, only a specialised service can solve this.

My sugestion is to reasembly LCD and see if peoblem persist or try with another one lcd.
