Want to use WPA how do I fix this?

Is there an exact guide how to upgrade the firmware of an 802.11b card to use WPA?

My problem is, my just connected 802.11b card does not even show up in "network", even after restart, its greyed out.

When I installed 10.3.9 on my iBook LE Graphite there was no AirPort card in place, does it mean during the installation process any AirPort software had not been installed? I had to install 10.3.9. over the network as its only got a CD drive (not DVD), hence, a bit time consuming..... so, all possible scenarios of "whats missing" to recognise that an AirPort 802.11b card is now in place would be good.

Once recognised and listed in "network" I want to upgrade the firmware (how??) to reach WPA security...

Thanks for help in advance :-)

Sadly the PowerBook as well as the iBook has an older AirPort card which does not have an updated driver that offers WPA within either Tiger or Leopard OS's.

The newest version of OS-X either the PowerBook or iBook will support is *This model is capable of using Mac OS 9 applications within the Mac OS X "Classic" environment provided with Mac OS X 10.4.11 "Tiger" and lower ("Classic" is not supported starting with Mac OS X 10.5 "Leopard"). It cannot boot into Mac OS 9. per EveryMac.

Your only hope here is to find an external USB WiFi adapter which you can get with WPA support. You'll need to look at the used hardware on eBay to find one.

The first three iterations of titanium PowerBook G4 can and will boot Mac OS 9. The 867mhz model will boot OS X 10.5 leopard.

OS-9 doesn't offer WPA services.

True that - but it does support LocalTalk LOL - I'm reminded of how cool I thought that was when I had a room full of System 7-9 apple pizza boxes and quadras jiving over phone cables. Things sure have changed.

One solution that I have used is to use internet sharing from a Mac that is connected to the internet via Ethernet and equipped with an airport card.

For instance I have a Imac G4 Ethernet, airport equipped, running tiger. Open system preferences > Sharing and check off Internet Sharing. Select to share your Ethernet To airport. Go to your PowerBook and get on board. Doesn't work t your local coffee shop of course.

You could also use a WiFi router instead of a second Mac. Again, using a wired (Ethernet) connection to the router and then setting up the router to use WPA or WPA2 to the WiFi AP you are trying to access.

Most coffee shops don't offer WPA or WPA2 (Network layer encryption) on their routers so that won't help if you want to keep things private. But, you could still create a httpS connection or a VPN tunneled connection to your office so your stuff is fully encrypted within the Transport layer of the session. It turns out there was a flaw in https so it's not as secure as we once thought. Here's more on HTTPS Heartbleed. Most have fixed this flaw so its less of a risk today.
