Hi noticed that the movies I purchased from Apple and watched on my Classic will no longer transfer to the ipod because it says the format is not supported. I watched them years ago on my ipod!

Sadly, the iPod is stuck in time! Apple has moved on to higher resolution video file types as the demand for better quality for the new retina and 4k display systems.
You can still use your iPod you just need to make sure you only copy to it playable vids on it.
Go into your iTunes and under Preferences > Store look at what you have selected under When downloading High Definition videos, prefer: your choices are 720p or 1080p. Make sure you select 720p as your iPod can't play 1080p vids.
You may want to limit your purchases to Standard Vs HD as well.

I did not see the 720 in the iTunes Store, but I did see it in iTunes under preferences. I selected it. deleted the movies and re-downloaded them. It did not solve the problem. I had originally purchased the HD Beatle movies which I sometimes watched on my Classic, but now they will not transfer.
As I use the ipod Classic 99% of the time to just listen to music and have 100 GB in songs, I would be a much happier camper with a 1TB Classic than a 128 GB touch!
The 720 setting is only within the iTunes app.
You got the right idea! Go to your movie file on your system and delete it. When you go to the store you'll need to download the standard version of the movie.
What I find annoying is that the HD Beatle movies that would play no longer do so. It's a capability I had that Apple has removed from my ipod in one of their updates! I knew that I was not seeing HD, but they would play.
I have not found out how to dl anything other than the HD versions I purchased. Dling just replaces the files with the same version.
