HDD instead of optical drive for MacBook Pro 2009 A1278 model

Hello,

I would like to know if I use 1 TB 5400 RPM 2.5" Hard Drive as a second drive instead of my optical drive with my Macbook Pro, since I have a Samsung 850 PRO 256GB SSD as the main drive.

Also, The Unibody Laptop Dual Drive has a Hard drive limit of 750GB, Does that mean I'll only be able to use 750GB of my 1TB?

If I want to replace the SSD in the optical drive and the HDD in the main drive, will my Macbook Pro model recognize the SSD and works properly?

Thank you,

You may want to review this: OWC Data Doubler.

It makes no difference who's unit you use here the optical drive SATA port requires a fixed SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) drive (HD or SSD) as the port has a known issue. So make sure your drive is compatible.

The other issue here is the optical drive does not have HD crash guard protection nor does it spin down the drive. So I don't recommend putting the HD in optical carrier.

As to the limit of the carrier its the height of the drive that is the limit (9.4 mm)

Do you recommend me to put my Samsung SSD in the optical drive and my HD in the main drive and use the OWC since it's compatible with my Macbook Pro model ?

No, the bus speed of the optical drive is slower. Use the SSD as your boot drive and the optical drive HD for storage.

I don't recommend dual drive setups in the Unibody models because of the SATA port issues they have.

Instead I recommend using a SSHD replacing the HD or just going with the SSD alone replacing your original HD.

Dan's answer is better than mine ;-)
