Will not turn on after plugging into outlet in car

We had a 32 gb Zune for some time. It stopped working when I plugged it into adapter in car. We purchased another on line. It was working fine until I once again pugged it into adapter in car. Now neither one will turn on. Is it possible that the battery or has circuite been fired by a short . Ccan they be repaired?

Not sure about the Zune, but I have had a cellphone that done this repeatedly. The phone would not come on after using car charger. I had to remove the battery, and put it back in the before phone would come back on.
