@bragginton sounds like a bad lid switch. At least that's what I would start with. If you give us your model number we can most likely give you more information on where the switch is as well as how to check it.

Thankyou old turkey, my other half was telling one if her friends our w/machine had died , her daughter had just moved in to an apartment which has a washer dryer, she asked her mum to sell her one which is only around a year old, $100, a great deal so we now have replaced the Kenmore, Thanks again ,
