Sleep/Wake function activate's from back of ipad

Hi all!

i used our friend Google, and i searched iFixit forums but couldn't find this problem, please help! :)

Since a while we run in to trouble after replacing digitizers for the iPad Mini / Mini 2, Air and Air 2.

This topic, i opened for the iPad Mini but the problem goes for all the above iPad models.

The problem is after replacing the digitizer with High Quality digitizers from different suppliers ( more than 5 ) the Sleep / Wake function you normally get when opening the smart cover now also! make's the iPad sleep when the smart cover is flapped on the back of the iPad models.

The problem in short explained:

So opening the iPad smart cover the iPad wakes up! Yes :D but when you flip the cover over, and slap it on the back of the iPad the iPad goes back to sleep! :(

We know it has something to do with the sensors, but we can't figure out what exactly the problem is! Please! Help!

Thanks from Holland!

I have this problem aswell. Tried isolating the home button flex, both under and over, multiple layers. This has worked with iPad Air. Not with this Mini though. Tested several digitizers. The hot spot seems to be the lower left corner of the digitizer. As soon as that corner nears the housing, a couple of mm's away, whilst the smart cover is on the back, the screen goes to sleep.

I just replaced the original iPad mini Smart Cover with one from a third party vendor. It fits really nice and works great except for one problem ……..when I open the cover and fold it to the back, the iPad shuts off every few seconds and I have to log back in with the 4 digit code. I put the original cover back on and everything works as it should. To get around the problem with the new cover, I fold it to the back and then fold the outer panel (the one that covers the camera lens) back over and hold it that way. I would prefer not having to do this. Suggestions would be welcome. Thanks

This is a common problem with the aftermarket home buttons. When doing these repairs transfer the original home button and it will take care of the issues. I've seen other posts on this topic they take about putting black tape around the sensors on the home button to make them not so strong to activate when that smart covers is touching the back.

It can't be the home button flex. I have a customers iPad Air here, which has a replaced digitizer by us. It wakes, when we open the Smart Cover and sleeps, when we flip it to the back.

I disconnected the small home button flex cable and the problem still persists. The magnetic sleep/wake sensor must be on the logic board.

On the iPad mini the function is on the digitizer near the home button. I also have a iPad Air 2 that I'm having this issue with and I tracked the function to the logic board to the left of the digi/lcd connectors near the edge with a small magnet. But I don't understand why this problem came up after a digi/lcd replacement. Any information will be helpful!

I had this same problem. Solved it by adding a small piece of metal plating to the inside of a third party Smart Cover case.

The magnet is too strong, cover the magnet with tape or insert a thin pics of metal or or foil inside the magnet sleeve which diminishes the magnets power. Should function normally…
