Any Experience with upgrading HD over 2 TB?

I want more internal storage on my late 2014 Mac mini. Have the 1 TB HD version with 16 gig RAM. Apple care and Genius Bar stands behind 2 TB being the largest supported HD size. Any experience with trying a larger HD (like 4 or maybe 6?)?

How do I clone my current drive onto new larger one?

Also can I add a SSD drive inside in addition to my HD (dual drive)?

What parts do I need other than tools reviewed in the tear down (required for opening)?

Help a size queen out LOL

Currently the space limitation of where the SATA drive fits is whats holding you back. Presently thats a 2 TB drive (HD or SSD). If and when a larger 2.5" drive which is no bigger than 9.5 mm in height comes onto the market then it maybe possible.

As to the number of drives your system can support it can support one SATA drive and one PCIe blade SSD (limit of two drives internally).

Migrating to a larger drive will require a SATA to USB adapter cable or a Thunderbolt HD case to house your new drive to transfer the data to and then swapping out the drives.

Frankly, I would recommend going with an external Thunderbolt RAID drive system. Here you can get a much larger drive configuration (as an example 8 or 10 TB) and gain the speed of the Thunderbolt connection which is faster than the internal SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) interface.

As to upgrading your system with a SSD: You'll need to install the needed cable assembly as your system currently does not have it. You can see it here in the IFIXIT teardown: Mac Mini Late 2014 Teardown in Step 9 in addition to the custom Apple SSD unit.

Here's an option but its going to cost you! The Samsung 850 EVO 4TB SSD Review. While this is a SSD Vs a traditional patter drive it will fit with not difficulty.

@danj - Seen anything on Mac compatibility? It never hurts to be sure. I've run into problems lately with external cases and Mac compatibility.

Haven't seen anything with external case issues as you describe. But, then again we generally go with prepackaged drives Vs building them from parts or altering them.

Most of our portable drives are USB in the field now (a few FireWire), our in-house engineering systems are setup with Thunderbolt RAID setups (still have one on FireWire).

The Samsung SSD drive I've listed here is an internal 2.5" drive which is the largest I've seen (HD or SSD) with the height of 9.5 mm. The newer 4 TB Samsung/Seagate traditional HD drive is 15 mm. The limit for the mini (very tight fit on the newer SATA HD/Blade SSD version system) is 12.5 mm. As it's so new I can't say for sure. But I can't see a reason why it wouldn't work. We have quite a few Samsung drives (internal & external SSD's) never had any compatibility issues with them.
