Canon EOS Rebel T2i doesn't shoot

Hello!

I'm troubleshooting my Canon EOS Rebel T2i and I was wondering if you could spare some advice.

The camera turns on correctly, I can browse the menu and change the photo settings without any issue. At this point, I can also turn the camera off using the power switch.

The problem appears when I take a shot. Regardless if there is a lens installed or not, the screen remains black and the little LED at the bottom-right stays solid red. The camera instantly freezes and ceases to function.

A couple of observations:

  • The mirror seems to work fine. I can hear the mirror going up and down when I take the shot, and I can physically see the mirror moving when shooting without the lens.
  • If no memory card is installed, the LED light remains unlit. If present, stays on solid.

Lastly, if the camera freezes, I must remove the battery to turn the camera off. The power switch won't engage.

Do you guys have an idea of the part(s) at fault?

Thanks!

Hello!

Reading similar posts, I figured that the problem with my camera could be either a broken/faulty mother board or a SD board.

Is there a way I can determine which one is at falult?

How can I test the SD board, so I can rule it out?

Thanks!!

Hello!

I solved my own problem, and I thought of dropping a line in case somebody could benefit from it.

While troubleshooting, I noticed a message "Err 80" in green letters in the viewfinder tiny display. I did a brief research online and found out that that err 80 is a generic error (dang!) and most people linked it to a motherboard failure.

I was getting a little frustrated, so I decided to take a leap of faith and replace the motherboard. The replacement was successful and I now can take pictures again.

A word of warning for all the non technician people (like myself!) attempting to this fix. I fixed laptops and phones in the past, but I must admit that I struggled a little bit during the camera motherboard replacement. Screws and flex cables are tiny and very many of them. I think it's still doable, but I strongly advise to read all the useful guides you can find on this forum beforehand and reserve 2 solid hours to complete the board replacement.
