Fingerprint scanner coding fixed?

Hi. Can anyone confirm some recent press stories regarding Apple removing the coding link between the motherboard and the fingerprint scanner? It's always been reported that the home button and motherboard are permanently linked and that the replacement of the home button would render the fingerprint scanner inoperable. Recent stories suggest that (due to consumer pressure?) this link was removed during an IOS update and that home buttons can now changed and the fingerprint recognition features can be now be retained?

Does anyone know definitively whether this is true?

For iPhone 5s, iPad Air, the button is not required for the phone to pass update verification. So if you update/reinstall iOS with a dead button, you simply lose Touch ID, that's it.

For any newer devices supporting Apple Pay, the button was required. Updating will fail to proceed and may even kill the device. However Apple finally decided to remove the requirement (they claim that it is simply a mistake, ha ha ha).

In ANY case, the fingerprint recognition CANNOT be restored by DIY repairs. If you break it you lose it. The only exception is the Genius Bar repair works, they have the ability to reprogram a new button during screen replacement.
