Replaced iPad battery. Works but crashes repeatedly while plugged in.

I've seen a few variations of this related to the battery being dead but my battery is actually OK.

Our old iPad2 was dropped and stopped responding/went into a boot loop when plugged in. I found heat-related damage on the battery connector. It looked like something shorted at the connector (maybe across the case?). There was some damage on the board connector as well.

Replaced the battery and digitizer while I was at it. The iFixIt kit and this web site were a great help. Now it seems to work fine on battery power but when plugged in it reboots after a few minutes. It charges VERY slowly and does not appear to charge during the times when it is fully on. 20 hours to go from 8% to 68%.

Note that I have not sealed everything back up yet if that matters.

Thanks for any thoughts,

Mike

A quick follow-up: I found this evening that if I properly turn the iPad off, it seems to charge normally. I'll have to confirm it also stops charging normally at (I assume) 4.2V.

There are two things that could be wrong: the charge port or the charging IC. Changing the charge port on your iPad is extremely easy and the parts are dirt cheap. I would try that. The charging IC is a job for someone with specialized tools and skills.

Thank you for the input.

If it's the board itself, I've seen that I can get a WiFi iPad 2 logic board for $60. I have a CDMA iPad but haven't used the cellular service in years. Can I switch to WiFi only?

The physical part of the change is easy. I've been unsuccessful finding out what you do on the software side. I don't even run iTunes anymore...

Yep, the boards are the same. The CDMA part is just a daughter board, so you could add it on to a wifi one if you still wanted cellular.

Could be damage to the logic board. If the battery is properly connected and the device holds a charge but reboots, then it could be damage on the board.

Thank you. I've been thinking the same and wondering if I should try replacing the board. Another responder suggested replacing the charge port first. That's certainly easy and cheap.

You should test the new port first before taking further action most definitely.
