Mac Pro 1,1 dead after processor upgrade

Today, I swapped my old Xeon 5150 processors for a pair of Intel Xeon X5355. Everything went well, had a bit of trouble getting some parts out, but nothing serious.

After I reassembled the machine, it failed at giving any lifesign. Not even an LED lighting up. AFAIK, this is a sign of a failing PSU. Any other defectuous part should at least have some LEDs light up, fans start up, etc. At least, that's what I believe. But how could the PSU break from changing the processors?

Could it possibly be somenting else. Or just a big coincidence? I love my old Mac Pro and it would make me very sad to see it die.

Your original machine should be the:

Apple Mac Pro "Quad Core" 2.66 (Original) 2006 Specs

Identifiers: Mac Pro - MA356LL/A - MacPro1,1* - A1186 - 2113

Your processor change would not do this. I'd go back over the connections to the power supply. You should at least be getting triple power even with a failed PSU.

Are you sure the new processor is not a 5365? I do not see where a 5355 was ever used in a MacPro.

I will be doing a similar upgrade in the next few day of a:

Apple Mac Pro "Quad Core" 2.8 (2008) Specs

Identifiers: Early 2008 - BTO/CTO - MacPro3,1 - A1186 - 2180

2.8 GHz Q. Core Xeon E5462

Going to:

Matching pair (2) Intel Xeon E5472 SLANR 3.0GHz

So I will watch for anything outstanding that I note.

BTW - Remember you will need the original system installation disk to do the fans syncing, or when you do get it running, you may have run away fans.

Ah, well. After sleeping over it, I think I remember that the last time the machine shut down, which must have been a week back or so, I inadvertedly interrupted the main power from the outlet and went "oops!" when I noticed the Mac was still running. Forgot about it later on, but that had killed my previous machine's PSU, which was a blue/white Power Mac, one time already. It has been sitting under my desk like a sad memorial of bad maintenance since then.

So I suppose it was that case of huge coincidence and the machine was already dead when I operated on it.

As to the Xeon 5355, they're okay according to many reliable sources on the web.

I'm buying a new 1,1 now as the price of a single PSU is usually higher than that of a whole machine. Luckily, those run starting at around 100-130€ now, so it won't be that much of a disaster on my wallet.
