Placed removed battery back in the phone, works as well as it ever did.
Original Apple PN removed from phone is 616-0809. New, non-working replacement is
616-0805. According to the web, they are interchangeable. Do I have a defective new battery? Any way to check the voltage of new batt with a multimeter?

Many aftermarket batteries don't work well with phones...especially iPhones and Samsung devices.
To test voltage on the battery you could put the multimeter in dc voltage mode. Place the red probe (positive) on the positive end of the battery and the black probe or ground/commong (negative) on the negative terminal of the battery. You'll see which side of pins are positive and negative on the battery itself.

I am very familiar with testing batteries, but the Iphone battery connector is a complete mystery to me. Where are the plus and negative pins?
I believe, and double check because I don't have one in front of me, on the back of the battery you'll see where it tells you which end is + and which end is -. On the iPhone 6 battery you'll have 4 pins. A positive on one end, the negative on the other, and two very close together ones in the middle. The two middle ones are battery switch pins or data pins so don't worry about those. Hooking up your multimeter to the two most outer pins should get you a reading. Worst case if the probes are on opposite sides you'll just get a negative reading.
